Chapter Thirty-five: Confounding Concern..
So, there I sat, curled up in a corner and watching her as she gazed into nothingness. About fifty single white roses, letters, pictures, cards and candles were arranged at her feet.
For weeks, it had always been the same routine. She would come here first thing before morning light with a single wild white rose that she specifically picked by herself from the bushes around and sit still for hours, staring hard at the tombstone while three scented white candles slowly burned until it was almost totally dark in the skies. Then, the big and scary-looking man would come to pick her up, and she would go home to continue the loop the next day.
The boss man made it a duty to always send him to get her, and once when she had refused to go, he had fulfilled his promise of coming himself to drag her back home, literally. Endra hadn't been very happy about that. I saw it in her eyes that she was going to continue putting up a struggle, but when the man named David threatened to lock her up in the house and promised she would never see the light of day, she weighed her options and adjusted real quick.
Smart girl..
A gentle wind ruffled her hair and snuffed out the candles. Endra came out of her head for a bit to light them up again. This time, when she sat down, she closed her eyes, and I could glance a white diamond sliding down her cheeks.
Sighs..
She was crying again..
It's a circle I wasn't in the mood to witness anymore..
I mean, I totally understand and felt sad about the whole situation but come on, I'm a cat and we get bored really fast. It was a wonder that I could continue coming along with her to this place everyday for almost six weeks now. My only enjoyment was chasing the birds that flew down, scaring little squirrels or watching Kyla chase her tail. It could get really worse, I tell you..
Endra baby had refused to leave his side for weeks since she got out of bed. She kept looking at the tombstone with an expression that resembled expectation and hopefulness. Like she was expecting him to stand up and come back to her.
Okay, don't get me wrong., I love the boy for my girl and when he wasn't being an annoying ass, you could put up with him a little. And I could accept him if he suddenly rose up from the dead but I don't think other people would be as subjective and welcoming as I am..
All the Dumontes had been present at the interment. It was a very sad and short service that consisted mostly of the priest speaking religious gibberish that I could never comprehend, no matter how hard I listened; the smell of salt in the air as eyes were filling up with water and pouring out; the choking sounds coming from Endra and Violetta which had turned into full blown wailing when he was lowered into the ground and the brooding silence from the brooding man and the giant in the corner. From when he was laid to rest until when the tombstone was installed, it was a sad experience I would never want to repeat again.
I turned to look at the tombstone. It read:
