Prologue

August 5, 2015

I looked up at my gate number. My head turned over towards Jack, my best friend since before I could even remember. Tears started running down our faces.

"And this is where we depart.." I said looking into Jack's eyes.

"Are you sure? Maybe it's a typo, I think your gate is further down the hallway." Jack says, desperate for more time.

"I wish it was, I wish this wasn't happening at all."

"You can't stay for another week? It's not too late.."

"Yea it is Jack. I have to leave, my mother is waiting for me."

"Nellie.."

"Yes, Jack?" He looked down, trying to hide his tears.

"Jack, please promise me something."

"What is it?"

"When I leave for California,"

"Yea?"
"Please don't forgot our memories.."

"I won't."

"When you go off for tour, remember our childhood, the songs we sang."

"I will remember."

"Jack?"

"Nellie?"

"Please remember our talks, our promises."

"I will, I promise with all my heart."

"Jack.." I said tears now streaming down my face. "Please don't forget me."

Our eyes met, like all those years ago. He nods, and we hug each other. Minutes go by feeling like hours. My plane gets called. I feel Jack's grip on my hands lessen to the point where he isn't holding them at all.

"I love you Jack.." I whisper in his ear.

"I love you too Nells."

I grab my carry on and walk towards the gate, taking one last look at my best friend. His heart is broken, I can tell.

"Please don't forget.." I say under my breath.

"I won't.. I promise." Jack whispers.

I turn back around and continue walking. My entire life flashed before my eyes. The memories, the songs, everything. And that was the last I saw of my curly haired friend...

Or so I thought.
