As promised Dave arranged a meeting with Officer Jones’ daughter, Sophia. She has pretty blue eyes, and wavy blonde hair – you know the common American. I enter Starbucks. Her eyes lit up a bit, but the emotion I can’t really pinpoint was still there.
“Hi I’m Katherine Valentine.” I hold out my hand.
“Sophia Jones, your dad contacted me, and I want to try to be as helpful as I can” Her voice is so sweet and shy – unlike mine, so blegh.
“Yeah, but let’s order first okay?” She grins and nods.
We pretty much got the same thing – creamed coffee and some donuts. After some small talk, I decide to break the ice.
“Uhm alright, Sophie, what can you tell me about Mark?”
Her eyes widen a bit, but she straightens out her posture. “Haven’t had his name asked in a long time but, I’ll give it a go”
“Anything you say would probably be helpful” Hope that helps her a bit.
“Alright, Mark and I dated during my freshman year, his sophomore year. He asked me out in the cafeteria, he said I was the prettiest girl he’s seen and I kind of liked him back already so I said yes. It was a great moment. Our first date as a couple was nice too, he even got a bundle of roses for me –“she smiles at that part.
“ – I knew he was a troubled kid, but that didn’t matter to me at that time. Dad even disapproved, but I just shoved him away. I mean the idea of love can be so intoxicating right?” I nod.
“Three months later, things got… uncomfortable. He would touch me in places I didn’t like and kiss my neck in public and so on. I couldn’t do a thing about it and I really didn’t know why. One night, he brings me to this party and he got a bit drunk and wanted to have sex. I refused of course, I wasn’t ready for it. But that’s not what bothered me; it’s what he said after”
“I will make you scream and destroy you mentally and physically…” Her voice cracked so she looked out the window.
“—of course I got scared and I just took off. The next day he broke it up and yes I was devastated. I didn’t bother to tell my dad about any of it seeing as I didn’t want trouble. Since then, I’ve been avoiding Mark – but junior year came and I met Jackson.
I’m happy with him, he gives me the strength and courage to fight off my fears and I have. It’s just Mark still lingers in my memories. I don’t think he remembers what he said to me since he already forgot I existed. But Kat, be careful around that one; he’s promiscuous, persistent, wanting, and out of control. The only reason he didn’t get what he wanted from me was because I ran away. Run away, when you have the chance – for your safety.”
She sips her coffee and I was still shock. I always thought that Mark was this uncaring and immoral guy – I never actually figured him out and now I have. This whole date thing’s starting to scare me…
