“Mom, I’m home!”

Silence, but I heard muffled voices almost right after. “Mom?”

I enter the little trailer. Dad was there, mom looked sad, and Kellin was nowhere in sight. I wanted to speak but my words were all cramped down somewhere. I don’t know what I’m feeling either – sad, angry, excited. I don’t know, but it was there.

“Wh-why are you here?” I stammered.

“Katherine, can we talk?”

I look at mom and she nods. “Where’s Kellin?” I ask.

“In his room…” I nodded and followed Dad.

Dad and I found our way to the diner. We both got steak, I smiled. Dad and I loved steak. He notices it and smiles too. He takes a sip of his coffee. I look at him, the years sure caught up. If I’m right he should be around 45 – mom’s 42.

“So Dad…” I started.

“I know that you look down on me, you and Kellin to be exact, but I just didn’t come back because Victoria called –“

“She stayed in contact?” he nods.

“… I also came back to correct the wrongs. I thought you were all still at Phoenix, but one day your mom calls and tells me about you. It shattered me Katherine, I really thought it skipped you and Kellin, turns out it got to you…”

“Dad please enough with the sympathy, you know I hate that.”

He chuckles. “Katherine quit acting so though because sometimes, it’s you that needs the saving.”

I looked down. He was right; I’d always make everyone’s problem, my problem. I don’t know why, but I always felt responsible for the feuds or problems that weren’t even associated with me in any way at all.

“How did Kellin react?”

“He got pretty pissed, punched the wall, and ran back to his room. I see he’s never changed” he smiles.

“Yeah, so dad, what have you been up to all these years?”

“I had a job, but once I got enough cash, I quit and started look for you all…”

“Dad, why’d you leave?” He looked astonished.

“I don’t know…”

“You just can’t know dad, there has to be a reason” my voice rose, and I was gripping on my knife.

He grabs it away and sighed. “Your mother and I had monetary problems. I didn’t want anything to do with it, so I left…”

“So you left because of a temporary problem?!” I yelled, people stared, but I don’t give a damn.
