"Peyton, wake up," I heard a voice say gently as a hand touched my shoulder. I groggily opened my eyes to see my mom.
"Good morning, Mom," I said drowsily. It felt so good to call her mom.
"Good morning Sweetheart. I'm sorry to wake you early on a Sunday, but today is the IQ and ACT testing day," she reminded.
"Oh, I forgot, I'll get ready," I replied. All my nerves for the test sprang back on me.
"Alright, I'll start on breakfast, Josh is up too, he has football this morning," my mom explained. I nodded. She gave me a smile and exited the room. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. I looked around the light blue bedroom my parents had surprised me with. They had bought me a ton of new clothes, a new phone and just welcomed me right in. I had never felt more at home.
As for everything that had gone down, tomorrow was my first day back to school. I had told all of my friends everything that had happened, from my gene edit to Greyson and I breaking up. With Greyson, I had decided to try and be friends again with him first. We had jumped right into our relationship last time and I knew if we really loved each other, we would come back to one another.
I threw on a pair of black leggings and a tie-dye t-shirt along with my white Nikes. I threw my hair up in a messy bun and scrambled down the stairs for breakfast. My dad was frying some bacon on the stove and my mom was pouring juice. Josh was on his phone, shoveling eggs into his mouth.
"Good morning, Peyton," my dad said with a smile, giving me a hug. Even though my real name was Eva, my parents and I decided for me to stick with Peyton since changing a name was pretty strange.
"Morning," I replied.
"Here you go," my mom said, sticking a plate of food in front of me as I sat down next to Josh.
"Thanks," I appreciated, taking a bite of bacon.
"Hey, P," Josh greeted, setting down his phone.
"Morning Josh," I said back.
"Are you nervous for the test?" my dad asked.
"I guess," I replied, picking at my eggs.
"You shouldn't be, it's going to be fine," my mom expressed. I nodded, not saying much. Truthfully, I was terrified. Dead terrified. Josh and my parents tried to make small talk with me, but I didn't say much due to how nervous I was.
"Alright Honey, I'm going to take you okay?" my dad confirmed. I nodded and put my dishes in the dishwasher.
"Good luck, you will be fine, okay?" my mom told me.
"Thanks, Mom," I said.
"Josh, hurry up, you're going to be late," my dad reprimanded.
"I'm going, wait, where is the test?" he asked.
"It's at the lab Peyton was at, about fifteen minutes from here, the test is about four hours," my dad explained.
"I can pick her up after practice," Josh offered.
"Are you sure?" my dad asked.
"Yeah, no problem," he confirmed.
"Are you okay with that, Peyton?" my dad questioned. I nodded. "Alright, let's hit it." I followed him out to his car.
As we drove, I said nothing. My dad turned on the radio for background noise and tried to make small talk, but I was short with my answers.
Once we reached the familiar, white building, goosebumps appeared on my skin.
