Watching Olivia leave somber left John confused, wondering if there was something that was said that offended her. Perhaps she did really want a private conversation with him and felt awkward with Paul there, possibly making her upset. There were some decisions he needed to make before tonight and knew this was going to change everything between them.
John hated causing Olivia to wait and figured it was something that always bothered her in the back of her mind. There wasn't any rush to be married, so for John, he wanted the timing to be perfect. They were so close to getting a record deal, he could feel it and knew that the next time she came home to see him, was the opportune moment. Even though on New Year's the subject was brought up once more, she left understanding he still wasn't ready, when in secret, he was planning the proposal all along.
After Ivan departed, they all gathered back to the stage, packing up their guitars as silence hung in the air. All his mind was focused on was getting over to NEMS and speaking to Brian about everything.
"You're thinkin' again," George exhaled his cigarette smoke, leaning his back against the stage.
John zipped up his black guitar case, picking it up by the handle, "She's got me worried, ya know. Me head's chocka."
George glanced over at Paul, who appeared expressionless, "She'll be fine, ya know. It's Liv."
"I dunno, she's hidin' somethin, I feel it in me bones," a smug smirk flashed across his face as he stared at Paul, "Just before Ivan come 'round, she was hesitatin' to tell me and Macca somethin'."
"What do ya suppose?" George exhaled his cigarette, blowing the smoke up in the air.
"I have a gander it's 'bout her shoot in Australia. She said it was postponed," John set down his guitar case on the ground, pulling a cigarette out of his jacket pocket.
Paul shrugged his shoulders, pulling the strap of his bass, "It's probably nothing, John," he shuffled his feet around, "Are ya still gonna ask her to marry ya?"
"Of course, Macca, just gotta figure out how else to distract her," he scratched his chin and smirked, "I've gotta let Brian in on it and see if Neil will help."
George raised his eyebrows, his mouth gaping open, "You're gonna propose?"
John suddenly couldn't help the large, wide, and most confident smile he ever had on his face. He paused, flashing that smile to both Paul and George, "I'm gonna propose to Liv, tonight."
The air was like frozen lace on their skin, delicate and cold, like winter waves on sallow sand. The sky was washed with grey, watery light illuminating thin patches to brilliance. Their black boots hit the icy and frozen pavement, quickly yet carefully making their way down the street on their way to the NEMS office. Their new manager, Brian Epstein, currently owned the infamous record store in Liverpool and it was a frequent spot where the lads were often seen nowadays.
