Once the train was loaded up with all of the props and equipment, it was time for us to board. We got the train cart at the very end, and it had straw flooring but it was completely empty. We all sighed and hopped in. It would take two days to get there, which was entirely too long to go just for a one night performance.
All of us had just been eating fruit, and occasionally meat if Al felt like hunting and starting a fire. But as of right now all we've eaten are stale pieces if bread. Luka is the only that is given a little fruit because of her condition. She was also given a pillow to support her back. Master was "pampering " her. I guess he really wanted that baby to live. For a new addition to the circus, I supposed. There was a small cart connected to us that we could just walk into as we pleased. It acted as a bathroom, with a sliding door to give us privacy, and a little hole in the floor to do our business. At least he was trying to be considerate.
In the middle of the day, everyone became more lively. Especially the stitched twins."When I was younger," Rin began, " I wasn't very happy. I still remember my mother's face, however. She loved us. She loved us very much. I was always the mischievous one, and Len. He was the opposite."
Everyone chuckled."Even though we were different, Mother loved us both. Without her... I don't know what we would've done back then. We were poor, but we all still managed to be as happy as can be."
Len decided to speak up. " And we used to sing songs together. All the time we were singing." I smiled as everyone said a little bit about themselves. They even finished each others sentences, since everyone knew each other's story.
"When I was very small," Oliver began, "I loved biscuits. Everyday I'd eat biscuits. And one day, mummy told me I'd turn into one! And I believed her!" Everyone bellowed with laughter. This is the first time I'd really seen them all genuinely happy and not plastering smiled for the show.
I suppose I never realized how "human" they were. They were all normal-ish folks doing their thing before the circus. Oliver's tale was one of the saddest. He was accused of stealing many times, and was driven out of his village to live in the woods. That's where Master found him.
The Flower sisters where orphans, and made a living off of letting people cut into them and instantly healing as a street act. Master abducted them a few years ago, taught them trapeze, and forced them to be in the circus. But Al's tale....it surprised me the most. Master..was his father. He was very young when his father first began the circus. It's the way he supported his mother. He said he remembered his mother was nothing but pure and kind and loving. But she never seemed happy when his father was around.
She'd take him to the circus he held. He used to love it, but his mother would sit their and frown. One day, Al found out where his mother was going after the show. She snuck back stage to help the members, because really they were being abused. Al became terrified of his father, but their was nothing he or his mother could do. One night, his mother wasn't there anymore. She was just...gone. His father was sitting in the kitchen, crying his eyes out. Al felt sick to the stomach. He knew his mother ran away, but why didn't she take him with her? She promised she would.
Mayu began sobbing before Al could finish. He smiled weakly at her. She covered her face, she was red from embarrassment but she just couldn't help it. She felt a cold hand grasp her wrist. "Mayu, it's okay." she shakily uncovered her eyes and faced Al. She faced everyone. All of the weak, pitiful smiled faced her. She felt good. She was noticed. That attention is what she lived for.Soon, everyone got tired out and decided to begin winding down. Mayu astarred out the hole in the cart and sighed. The sky was a gray-blue, and the trees whisped by as the cart gently rocked. The wind felt good in her hair. But she just couldn't get the image of last night out of her head. There was still so much she didn't know about these people.
"You haven't gone to sleep yet?" a raspy voice said from behind her. It was Oliver, slowly beginning to wake up. She smiled at the small lad. "What are you doing up, Ollie?" she asked, still staring out the window.
"I could say the same for you. "
"It's not that late, Ollie. I'm far from tired."Oliver sighed. "It's so boring here. I can't sleep. Oh Miss Mayu, I don't know what to do. I'm hungry, tired, but happy As can be!" his tone of voice was different. There were tears in his eyes but he had the biggest grin on his face as the wind blew his hair back.
"My, my. What a time to be alive!"All Mayu could do was stare at him. At his happiness. At his gratefulness. Mayu sighed and closed her eyes. She felt guilty for accepting that pity from earlier. They all were tired and broken hearted, but they still remained intact somehow. What a mystery, these people.
"Oh, it looks like she's waking up." he turned and smiled. Mayu turned in his direction to see the little twin-tailed brunette awake and looking very cranky. He sighed.
"She becomes restless when I leave her side when we sleep."
The little girl latched onto Oliver's arm and cowered behind him from Mayu. He grinned. "It's okay, she won't hurt you" She slowly came from behind him with blunt eyes and a small frown. The way she looked at Mayu was eerie.
"Why don't you smile for Mayu?"
The little girl sighed and plastered on a smile. Mayu jumped a little. The girl had an abnormally wide smile with big, sharp teeth. Oliver chuckled At Mayu's fear. "Isn't she just a wonder! What a curiosity this one is." he picked the girl up and she laid down on his shoulder."Well, Miss Mayu. Goodnight."
She smiled. "Goodnight, Ollie."Soon after, Mayu herself began to get tired. She went into the seperate cart to use the restroom, but something in the dark corner caught her. The shape of a person, and a large person at that. "Who goes there?" Mayu asked, shaking a bit. The figure slowly rose. Mayu gulped, they were much bigger than she thought. Their purple eyes shone in the light from the small window of the cart. But they didn't look angry. They look worried. "Who are you?" she asked again, speaking in a lower tone than before.
The person sighed and walked to the other side of the cart. She could see them a bit clearer. They jumped to sit in the window, and shot Mayu a big smile before jumping out of the window. Mayu gulped. She didn't see much of the person, just a lot of purple.Mayu didn't sleep very well that night.
