We got back to the district and I sat Maria down.
"Look Maria, I know you don't want to tell us what's going on but I think after tonight you have to. You can trust us. We can keep you safe."
"Don't you see?" She asked standing up from the chair and passing the length of the room. "I can't. This is my fight."
The Unit looked at her. "Not anymore. It's all our fight now." Hailey said.
"Please. Just tell us what happened." I asked again.
She huffed and rubbed her temples with her fingers, like massaging her brain would help her decide what to do. I know that this is taking everything out of her. I think she wanted to tell us but she's scared. Scared of what will happen if word get's out she's with the police or what this guy or TT will do to her.
"I did something I regret." She whispered. "It's my fault she's dead okay?" Maria threw her hands up. "That's why he's after me."
"Tell us what happened." I said.
"I was still with TT at the time. This girl was getting in the way of all of TT's deliveries and whatever else he does. He told me to deal with her. He wanted me to kill her. You don't go against TT. I got to her, fought with her. I won, I had my gun pointed to her head..." We all held our breaths hoping she wasn't going to say what we think she's gonna say. "But I couldn't pull the trigger." I let out a long held breath, thank God. "What I did was much worse. I called the cops, they arrested her."
"I don't see how that's worse. She could get help. Clean up her act, start a new life away from the gangs and drugs." Kim said.
"Not when your Dex's sister." She took a deep breath before continuing. "She was taken away, put in Stateville. She lasted a week before one of the inmates beat her and killed her in her own cell." My heart dropped. Oh Maria. "Dex was determined to find out who put his little sister in there and make them pay. I was the one to put her in there. He knows it was me. I thought he would have stopped by now. It's been a year."
There was silence before Jay spoke. "How does TT tie into your life?"
"Like I said, I would have been dead at twelve if it wasn't for TT. He kept me fed, clothed, and kept a roof over my head. He got me through school, went to my graduation last fall, he kept me alive. I was his second. I didn't do drugs or was I apart of his shady business. He told me he didn't want me apart of that. He was the one who got me off drugs. He stayed by my bedside through the whole thing. The sweats, the delusions, the puking and no matter how mean I got he wouldn't give me a fix. I owe TT everything. When he needed someone scared straight or to be beaten or warned I was the one he sent out. When someone came after me, TT dealt with them, how, I have no idea. I owe TT my life. He isn't a bad guy. He may do bad things but he was the closest thing to a father, or a brother. He was the only parent I've ever had so if he needs me, I will be there, no questions asked." She paused. "But I got out of the game. My mother was worse than before, she needed my help. TT understood, he told me that no one would touch me or come near me. I've been out of the game for almost six months now. That's why when Anna heard that Dex was coming to the Pub we booked it."
"Well now that we know what is happening we can help you. Police protection, you can stay with me." Hank said.
I stood up. "Or you can stay with me." I told her.
"Thanks but I have to get back to my mother. She is probably losing it right now." Maria grabbed her things.
"Look if you need anything, please call us, we will be there, day or night. I can promise that." I told her handing her my card. Everyone else in the group handed her their cards as well.
"Thanks." Maria said, "I need to get Anna, where is she?"
"Downstairs, I'll get someone to get her and meet you out front."
She nodded at me and left.
I have absolutely no idea what I'm thinking right now. This girl is deep.
"I have no idea how to help her." I admitted to Voight.
"Me either man. I want to help her, but we have to wait for her to come to us." He told me.
No matter how much I didn't like that, I knew he was right.
