We were all in the office going over papers when my phone ran.
I didn't reconize the number. "Detective Dawson."
"This is Anna Montgomery, Maria's best friend."
"Yeah I know who you are, what's wrong?"
"It's Maria. Something's happened."
My blood ran cold, fear spread through my body.
I called the team over and put the phone on speaker.
"Tell me what happened Anna."
"Well Maria and I left work and I called her asking her to go shopping today and told her I'd meet her at her house in two hours. I got here and she didn't answer so I opened the door and..." She trailed off clearly flustered.
"And what Anna?" Hank practically yelled.
"And... God... her mother... she's dead.. Oh Hell she's dead."
"What?!"
"Come over. Please, I need help. Maria, she's..... Here but she won't move. Won't speak. I don't know what to do."
"We will be there. Hold on."
We waisted no time getting to Maria's house. Hank and I were the first through the door.
Anna met us. "She's over here. I can't get her to move."
She brought us to the living room and I closed my eyes, heart breaking for Maria. I knew Hank's was too. Maria was curled up beside her mother. Hand over the gash taken out of her stomach, head on her chest. She had a death grip on her.
I holstered my gun and walked over, squatting beside her. "Maria." I spoke her name softly. I rubbed her shoulder. "Can you move for me?" She stared blankly at the wall. "Honey? Maria, she's gone. We have to get you up and cleaned off. " I told her gently. She still didn't move.
Jay pushed to the front. "Let me try." I nodded and backed up, I didn't want to crowd her.
"Hey Maria, it's Jay. We need to get you up okay? Can you get up for me?"
"She's gone." Maria whispered.
"I'm so sorry Maria." Jay said, rubbing her back in a circular motion.
"Can you let us help you?" I asked.
Maria lifted her head and kissed her mothers cheek. "I love you mommy."
I was starting to tear up, I blinked them back. I had to be strong to show control and to let Maria know that we are composed and not breaking. That we will be here for her while she mends.
"Come on." I said. I grabbed her shoulder and she slowly but surely lifted her one arm off of her mother and gripped my t-shirt. I reached under her armpit until I could reach her other side and I lifted her up and against me. She was so still, like she was just a vessel, nobody inside.
She couldn't stop looking at the woman on the floor.
I slowly walked her outside and down the steps when she spun out of my arms, leaned over the front bushes and hurled.
Hailey rushed over with a bottle of water.
I held Maria's hair back and rubbed her back. God I couldn't imagine walking in to see that. It was hard enough with it being an ex/one night stand, but if that was my own mother. God.
She took the bottle and cleaned her mouth, rinsed and spit. "Sorry." She mumbled.
"Don't be."
I took her back to the district and wrapped her in a blanket.
Maria just laid on the couch. Not moving, not talking. Just stayed there.
I walked over to Anna. "Can you go talk to her. If anyone can reach her. It's you."
She nodded and walked into the room. I watched as Anna gathered Maria in her arms and held her tight. She balled. Cried and cried.
Jay walked up to me. We watched her cry. "God it's so hard to watch." He spoke.
"Tell me about it. I feel helpless."
"I know."
"Jay I know that you like her."
"What?"
"Jay don't play coy. I know you like her and I know I can't stop her from being with you if that's what she wants. She's seventeen, and she may not even be my child. You're a good man. Don't hurt her."
"I won't Antonio. I promise."
Anna came out of the room with Maria. "Bathroom?" She asked. I pointed down the hall.
Anna walked Maria down the hall and came back to the room.
It was like fifteen minutes later and Maria hadn't come out of the bathroom.
I knocked on the door. "Maria. Are you okay?" No answer. "Maria?" No answer. I opened the door to an empty bathroom. There was nothing but a folded blanket on the sink.
I walked out to the main room. "Guys, Maria is gone."
Fear of the worst kind hit me. Maria was in a daze, she wasn't thinking clearly. She could go run right into the lion's den, gun's ablazing without a second thought. We needed to find her and fast. Before she kills herself, or anyone else.
