Needing You

Spencer woke up feeling like absolute crap and the worst thing about it was that her safe place to land wasn't there to take care of her, he was away on a business trip and wouldn't be home for a few more days.  

“You've got to be kidding me.” Spencer said weakly as she looked at the thermometer that said that her temperature was 104.06 and then she got a cold washcloth and stumbled back into bed and then she put the washcloth on her forehead to try to get the fever to go down and she closed her eyes to try and go back to sleep, when her phone rang and she gently reached over and grabbed it off the nightstand and looked at the caller ID, it was Toby. “Oh crap.”

Now usually she would be over the moon that he was calling, and she still was, but she didn't want him to know that she was sick because she knew that he would just drop everything and come back home to take care of her and as much as she wanted that she didn't want him to leave his work for her, even though she knows he would.

She took a deep, heavy breath and then brought her phone to her ear and tried to make her voice sound somewhat normal as she talked to her safe place to land.

“Hey Tobes, I miss you.”

“Hey baby, Everything okay? You sound kind of off.”

Crap. Well she knew he'd be able to tell because he knew her better than anyone else.

“I'm fine Tobes really it's nothing to worry about.”

“Are you sure Spence?”

“Yeah I'm fine.” And then she started coughing, stupid sore throat.

“Spencer.”

She had to tell him.

“Okay I may have come down with something.”

“Spence why didn't you call me?” He said, his voice full of worry and concern.

“Tobes you're eight hours away in North Carolina and I didn't want you worrying about me and rushing home because you're supposed to be working.”

“Spence, that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, Of course I want to be there with you and hold you in my arms and take care of you and so what if my boss has a problem with it, you know that you are my number one priority Spence and I know for a fact that you want me to be there with you right now, don't you?”

“Tobes you can't just abandon your work and jump on a plane back here right now, besides just talking to you and hearing your voice I feel better already.”

“You didn't answer my question babe.” He said calmly but sternly at the same time.

“Yes of course I wish you were here with me, but like I said I'm fine Tobes.” And then she started having another coughing fit and it just broke Toby's heart that he wasn't there to hold her and comfort her right now.

“Spence just try and breathe for me baby girl and I am taking the next flight home that I can get okay? I'll be there as soon as I can.”

“I-I love you.”

“I love you too baby girl, just try and get some rest and I'll be there before you know it.”

“You're too good to me.” She croaked out.

“I’m the lucky one here baby. Just try and get some rest okay?”

“I promise, I love you Tobes.”

He hated hearing her voice so weak like that.

“I love you too Spence, just try and rest and I promise I will be there soon as I can.”

“I promise.” Spencer weakly croaked out before they said I love you one more time before finally hanging up and then she put her phone back on her nightstand, but not before she glanced at the time, it was only past noon, and even if Toby was able to get a flight back right now he still wouldn't be home until late. She sighed heavily as she took the washcloth off her forehead and rolled over on her side to try and get some sleep, which was already hard without Toby there to rub her back but being sick did not help the situation at all.

Finally after what felt like forever she was finally able to fall asleep, only to be woken up a few hours later by a nightmare and once she woke up she immediately felt around the bed for Toby, but unfortunately he wasn't home yet so she just laid there breathing heavily and tried to calm herself down with thoughts of Toby.

FIVE HOURS LATER

As soon as Toby got back to Rosewood he made a quick stop at the store to get some things he knew Spencer would want to help make her feel better and once he got everything he headed back to their loft and once he got there he put the bag of stuff on the counter and then went towards their bedroom door and once he slowly opened the door he saw his safe place to land curled up in a ball with the covers pulled up to her chin and she was sleeping and he didn't really want to wake her up but he knew that she would want to know that he was home so he carefully set his suitcase down on the floor and walked over to her side of the bed and kissed her forehead gently, which broke his heart when he felt how warm she was, he knew she couldn't possibly be comfortable feeling like this.

“Tobes?” She weakly croaked out and gave him a small smile. “I'm here baby I'm here.” He soothed before kissing her forehead again. “How are you feeling?” He asked with concern. “Terrible.” She said before coughing again and he immediately sat on the edge of the bed and pulled her into his arms and rubbed her back comfortingly. “But I'm better now that you're home.” She said weakly before burying her head in his chest.

“Spence you're burning up.” Toby said worriedly. “I know, I can't get it to go down.” Spencer said sighing. “Well now I'm here and I'm going to take care of you okay?* Toby said as he kissed the top of her head and she nodded against his chest. “I'm really glad you're back, I had a nightmare earlier when I was trying to sleep, a-and I felt around the bed for you and you still weren't home yet and it took me a while to get myself calmed down enough to fall back to sleep.” Spencer said weakly as she hugged him tighter. “I'm so sorry that I wasn't able to hold you after your nightmare but I'm here now baby girl and I'm not going anywhere I promise.” Toby soothed as he rubbed her back comfortingly. “I love you.” Spencer said weakly. “I love you too Spence, we need to get this fever down baby girl.” He said and Spencer nodded. “I'll go get you another cold washcloth to put on your forehead okay?” Toby asked but Spencer shook her head. “Don't leave.” She said hugging him tighter. “Spence baby we need to get your fever down okay? I promise you'll be right back, just lay here and rest babe.” He said before kissing her forehead.
“Okay, you promise you'll be right back?” She asked weakly and he nodded as he brushed some hair out of her face.
“I promise, just lie down and try to get some rest and I'll be right back.” He said gently and she nodded and then he helped her lay back down and he put the blanket back over top of her and then he kissed the top of her head again before walking to the bathroom to get another washcloth and Spencer breathed a heavy sigh of relief that Toby was finally home to take care of her.

A few minutes later Toby came back and she smiled at him. “You're supposed to be sleeping.” Toby said. “Well I couldn't really do that without cuddling up to you.” Spencer croaked out and Toby gave her a small smile. “Well I'm not going anywhere, let's hope this helps your fever go down because I know you won't want to try a bath.” He said and Spencer shook her head.
“Yeah I thought so.” Toby said laughing and then he gently placed the cold washcloth on her head and then he climbed back into the bed with her and she snuggled up to him again. “Do you need anything else?” Toby asked and she shook her head. “No I'm okay, I just need you right now.” Spencer said weakly and Toby kissed the top of her head. “Okay baby girl, just try and get some rest.”
He said gently and she nodded. “Thanks for coming home early to take care of me.” She said and he smiled. “I'd do anything for you baby girl.” He said as he rubbed her back comfortingly. “I know that, and that's why I love you so much my Tobias Cavanaugh.” Spencer said. “I love you more Spence, now try and get some rest, I'm right here.” Toby soothed to her and Spencer nodded before finally closing her eyes and letting herself drift off to sleep listening to Toby's heartbeat.
