3x16 AU- What if Toby was in the loft when Spencer was outside crying and he lets her in?
‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵"I know you're in there. Will you... Will you just tell me that what I saw tonight wasn't real? Please! Just tell me that there's more to this story... That there's something that I don't know. Please. Please, Toby... Please, Toby."
Toby was indeed sitting inside his loft, it was killing him hearing Spencer's cries from outside the door, and as much as he wanted to go and open the door, he honestly didn't know what he'd say. What if she didn't believe him? He really didn't want to lose her, although things definitely weren't looking good right now and him not opening the door would probably make them worse, and he really didn't want to just leave her out there crying all night, he wanted to go open the door and hold her, but he assumed that she wouldn't welcome his touch right now, so instead he sat there, her cries still echoing behind the door.
"What have I done?" Toby whispered to himself as tears started to fall down his face, he glanced over at the kitchen table where the lasagna that he'd discovered that Spencer must've made for their Anniversary was no doubt cold by now, and then he stared at the special Scrabble board that Spencer had engraved for him, he felt terrible that he basically ruined her surprise for him, he wished there was something he could do, this was their first Anniversary, it was supposed to be special, and not like this. "I'm so sorry Spence." He whispered to himself as more tears fell down his face, he sighed softly and tried to take a deep breath, he put his head in his hands for a few seconds, his heart breaking more as Spencer's cries from outside got louder, of course making him feel more terrible.
Finally he couldn't take it anymore, he got up from the couch and went over to the door, he took a deep breath before opening it, Spencer stared up at him, her face tear-stained. He couldn't tell if she was angry or relieved that he'd opened the door. The pair stared at each other in silence as Spencer pulled herself off the ground, and then she was standing face to face with Toby, he didn't know what to expect from her, was she going to slap him again?
He certainly didn't predict what she was actually going to do.
She fell into his arms, starting to sob all over again, he was shocked at first because obviously he wasn't expecting her to embrace him right now, but he wrapped his arms around her and held her close to him, and he hoped that when she calmed down a little bit that she would let him explain.

After what felt like a long eternity later, Toby was still holding Spencer in his arms, but her sobs had calmed down quite a bit, her head remained on his chest and her eyes were closed tightly, it's almost as if she was hoping that when she opened them again that this would all turn out just to be a horrible nightmare and that it wasn't real and that her safe place to land hadn't betrayed her like that.
