this is going to be a pretty long one so sit down, get comfortable, grab a snack and a drink because i'm about to ruin some childhoods. the pixar theory is a theory created by jon negroni that says all the pixar movies take place in the same universe and have a chronological order that's very different to the order that the movies were made in.
so, the first point. all the movies are in the same universe. this explains the references in the movies. for example, you can see jessie from toy story in monsters inc, lotso from toy story in up, doc hudson from cars in the incredibles, mr incredible in finding nemo, a postcard from carl and ellie on andy's bulletin board in toy story 3, and many more easter eggs.
now, the order. the order pixar has been making movies - toy story, a bug's life, monsters inc, etc - doesn't really make any sense until you see it in a different order - chronological order.
the first movie in chronological order is brave, since that takes place in the 14th or 15th century. in brave, merida discovers magic for the first time - the will-o-the-wisps. this magic turned her mum into a bear (the whole plot of brave) which is when animals and inanimate objects start to behave like humans in the pixar universe.
eventually the use of this magic ended up creating superheroes, which leads us to the incredibles. superheroes were created in the 1950s and the plotline of the incredibles is in the 1970s. as you know, during the incredibles syndrome creates two things that destroy superheroes - the a.i. bots that turned against humans and zero point energy.
this isn't in the main theory, but i've read theories about it from other places & i think it could fit in here. this is connecting inside out to the other pixar films. the theory says that riley, the main character in inside out, is andy's mum. anyway, back to the main theory!
twenty years or so later in 1997 toys draw powers from zero point energy and toy story begins. during toy story we see the first signs of life within the toys. they come up with a set of basic rules to follow so they aren't noticed and learn that human love is another energy source, so they're going to want as much human love as possible.
then two years later in 1999 is toy story 2, where the toys learn that not all toys want human love, especially the ones that were abandoned by humans. the abandonment made them question their purpose in life and created their hatred towards humans.
soon enough animals start to resent humans too, especially for their (well, our) barbaric actions. this brings us to finding nemo (my ultimate favourite movie as a kid) in 2003. in finding nemo fish have become much more advanced after gaining intelligence from zero point energy and have schools and a freeway system. but, of course, humans ruined it. we were polluting the environment, stealing and caging fish (all of which happens in the real world, pet tropical fish are often stolen from the ocean). so obviously they're going to start hating us too.
this moves us on to ratatouille in 2007, where we see animals show more human characteristics. for example, the rat remy washes his hands, walks on two legs and of course cooks like a human. this is the first time we see animals and humans interacting, but in this case it's for the purpose of animals controlling humans - remy controls linguini, who doesn't know how to do anything. while this is happening the rat clan starts bossing everyone around. it is clearly shown in the movie that rats hate humans. i'm sure you can see where this is going.
next is toy story 3. three years later the toys are suffering from emotional and physical abuse from human kids at the day care. lotso, the hugging bear and leader of the toys at the day care, despises humans because of his horrible experiences with them. that's why he tries to take care of his own kind at the day care. this is one of the many reasons animals and robots will try and take over, but more on that later. now we start to see buy n large, or bnl, coming into the movies. they made buzz lightyear's batteries and will also be very important later on.
