Sarah and I entered the bar slowly. I already knew that it was going to be a long night, even before I walked in.
Jimmy knew the owner of my favourite bar and made a deal that he could pay them to have it only available to only him and his guests for the night. They had no issue as long as he paid up front.
"Happy birthday buddy" I accosted as he pulled me into a bro hug.
"Thanks, man" he licked his lips as redirecting his gaze at Sarah. "Damn, you are fine...Ned how come you didn't tell me she was so fine?"
He was complaining about her attending his party shortly before this conversation. That was the kinda guy he was.
"Happy birthday Jimmy" she smiled.
"Isn't there a rule that if it's a man's birthday and he hasn't been banged yet then the woman to arrive late to the party needs to give him head?" Jimmy raises a brow.
She blinks "What?"
"He's kidding" I assured her.
"Am I?" He raised a brow.
"You're twenty-two years old" she raised her brows "isn't all the sex meaningless?"
Jimmy and I exchanged amused looks. "Where did you find her?" He asked me.
"Whatever" she rolled her eyes "I'm going to the ladies" with that she left our sights.
"I take back what I said...she ain't fine, she's fucking annoying " he stated "If she wasn't so hot I would advise you to get rid of her" Jimmy started "but since she is hot, I say nail her then get rid of her"
I wasn't going to do that, but it was just easier to agree with him.
I nodded "right"
"So what's her story?" He asked, "She sleeps with everyone but no one can have her emotionally?"
I smirked "Something like that"
"And you're not hitting that?" He widened his eyes.
I had no intention of sleeping with Sarah. Not only was she my buddies sister, but she was also annoying.
"Jimmy he's here!" A woman cried from the door.
"Whose here?" I asked curiously, as a list of names came to mind.
"The Mentalist" he grinned.
A mentalist is a magician who performs feats that demonstrate mental powers, such as mind-reading. I had only ever seen them on tv.
I was surprised that he hired a mentalist. Not only did I believe that that shit wasn't real, but it also scared the crap out of me.
"Say what?" I raised both brows. "That shit ain't real"
"Excuse me?" Jimmy narrowed his eyes "I bet he can read your mind"
I didn't believe in them, so I thought that I had nothing to worry about.
"I'll take that bet" I agreed but immediately regretted it.
"Hey, mister mentalist" Jimmy waved at the man who wore a creepy black suit.
"Mister mentalist?" I cocked a brow at Jimmy.
"My buddy over here bets you can't read his mind" Jimmy laughed as the guy approached us.
The mentalist nodded as looking into my eyes. "Well Let me see what I can do," he said in his thick Israeli accent.
"This is bullshit" I laughed.
"Shhh" Jimmy shook his head at me.
The dude placed his hand at the back of my head as closing his eyes. "Your father's name is.." he raised his voice "A B C D E F G H I J-J-John? Am I right?" He opened his eyes and took a step back.
I rolled my eyes in disbelief "John's a common name"
"Okay," he nodded "what about your mother's name?"
"Here we go" I rolled my eyes as he placed his hand at the back of my head again and shut his eyes.
Something would happen to Elise and me whenever we would hear our mothers name. Our brother Luke never understood it.
"A B C D E F G H I-I-Isadora?" He guessed, still with his eyes closed and his hand on my head.
I laughed "wrong!" I shook my head "see Jimmy, I told you this was all bullshit"
"Isabella?" He shook his head before taking a step away from me and smiled "no Isabel?"
My eyes widen as I turn the Jimmy with anger "What is this man?" I pulled him by the front of his coat.
"What's what?" His eyes widened in fear.
"You told him my mother's name? Why? To fuck with my head?" I screamed.
"Ned!" Sarah came running to my side.
"I didn't" he shook his head as my face sat only a few inches from his.
"Let go of him Ned" she ordered.
I pushed him away from me, before walking outside of the bar.
"What is wrong with you?" Sarah cried as following me outside.
An overwhelming sense of fear and hostility is what would wash through my sister and me whenever we heard our mothers name.
Whenever my dad got angry he would accuse me of being just like her. Elise knew that her name triggered anger inside of me my entire life, as a response her name would trigger fear inside of her.
"You think you can fix me?" I glared at Sarah "I'm so beyond damaged that there's nothing anyone can do but steer clear!"
She shook her head "don't say that" Sarah ordered.
"Why not? It's true isn't it!" I screamed, "You saw what happened in there!"
"You're damaged yes! But all broken things can be repaired" she assured.
"Stop trying to fix something that you didn't break!" I blared "I can't be fixed, so stop trying to fix me!" I slapped the side of my head multiple times with great force.
"Ned calm down!" she begged as tears began rolling down her cheeks.
"Ned listens to my voice" Elise ordered "shhh listen to my voice, repeat after me" she began humming a nursery rhyme, we then began humming at the same time as tears ran down both our cheeks.
"Nothing to see here!" Sarah screamed at the people staring as walking by us.
I pressed my head against the brick wall with my fists clenched. Why did my past drive me so crazy? I've always blamed my parents. Elise used to tell me not to because blaming them for all my problems was not healthy.
I also asked how she can live her life without all this mess hanging above her head like a grey cloud. She just looked at me and said that the cloud is still there, she just disguises as the sun. I told her that was cheesy as fuck, and she just laughed.
Something happened as she was laughing. She paused and smiled. She then said, "Life isn't about the cards that you've been dealt. It's about how you play the hand. A wise player can take a weak hand and still win the game".
To be completely honest, I didn't understand what my sister was talking about till later. I guess what she was trying to tell me, was that she was just bullshitting her way through life.
"Ned" a deep voice greeted from beside me.
I kept my eyes on the wall and refused to make eye contact with the man.
"He's here to take you away from all this" Sarah whispered from beside me.
I pulled away from the wall and wrapped my arms around him."C'mon let's go, man," Sam suggested.
