Even though we can all have a million friends, real, priceless friendships are uncommon and have a deep significance.
Anisa:
Midway through reading a book on Wattpad, I took a sip of coffee. I had finished all of my work by 9 p.m., and I was still reading a romance novel on Wattpad because it was so intriguing that I wanted to see what would happen. After Maghrib at 7:45 p.m., I had eaten dinner, prayed the Isha and the Qur'an, and then spent some time with my parents. The way the author had described the man in the next chapter reminded me of my best friend, Ayman, as I began to read it. As friends, his parents and mine had a close relationship that I always assumed to be strong, so he was the only guy I had ever let into my life.
Can a man and a woman maintain a long-term friendship?
We had shared everything we knew about each other since childhood; we used to call at 12 a.m. on birthdays, prank others, tell stories, and be there for each other through good and bad times.
I was a shy person, but around him, I was just a fun-loving friend who was full of life until something changed.
He had a smile on his face and was constantly kind and loving. I recall him telling me that everything that occurred was for our collective benefit. When everything started to gradually fade when I was 12 and he was 15, I just watched until I could take it no more.
He had sea-blue eyes that were always happy and full of mischief; he was taller than me and liked to wear his hair messy. Girls fawned over him in high school, even at that age, but he never gave a damn, trying to keep his gaze down, the way I did around other people.
It is been twelve years since I last saw him, so he must have changed significantly. No, Anisa, give up dwelling on the past. He is not your friend anymore. Recall what transpired when Mayra showed up
My thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock. I set down the phone, wiped a tear, and went to open the door.
I gave my mother a big bear hug, and she smiled briefly before frowning and staring at me.
"Why is my daughter crying?" she asked, dragging me onto the bed.
"Nothing, mum, just a novel made me cry," I explained. "I simply remembered someone throughout the scene; I did not lie."
She smiled and gave me a hug, saying, "You know you are a terrible liar." The only person who knew everything was her.
I tried to sound confident as I told her, "It just brought back memories, mum, and it hurts a lot," but I could not stop thinking about how much I missed him. My voice cracked and I started crying.
Even though I now realize that is not the right way to think of him as an adult, he was my closest friend before Mayra. Instead, we should keep our distance and turn a blind eye.
"Do not be concerned; everything will be fine; life goes on," she said, and I nodded.
She wiped away my tears and said something I did not want to hear.
"There is a proposal for you; what should I say this time? She inquired, knowing full well that I was only 24 and not ready.
"Please, mum, I am trying to move on from the past, and for the time being, can we say no to them?" I pleaded with my eyes, and she nodded in understanding.
He never called nor texted me after whatever happened, and it hurt a lot. Will I see him again?
"By the way, I forgot to tell you that Ahad and Yumna are returning from Dubai to London for good," mum said with a weak smile, staring at me as if to see if I was all right. I wanted to ask her if Ayman was also coming, but I did not have the strength to do so, and hearing his parents' names made my throat dry.
I nodded and smiled as she left, then went to my bed and sobbed. "They will come for dinner at our house tomorrow, InshaaAllah, because they are arriving in the evening," she said, urging me to sleep so I could get enough rest.
"Was Ayman with them?" that was only questioned in my head since the time mum mentioned them why after whole 12 years were they back?
