As Anne and Gilbert walked to school, they talked about everything and anything. The funny thing was that they never got bored or awkward with each other. They always found something to talk about, in which they felt comfortable in discussing and analysing the topic. It was one of the best things about their relationship.
The sun was shining amongst the trees, over watching all of Avonlea. Not a cloud was present amongst the clear, blue sky, and all the flowers were blooming from their temporary homes. If you were to look up, you would see the rays of light fighting to escape through the abundance of leaves in which the trees provided. The wind was faint, yet was enough to allow the leaves to dance with its tune.
As the two got closer to the school, Anne thought it appropriate to hum to herself. She began to skip, happily enjoying her little made up song. This made Gilbert so much more infatuated with Anne - he loved that she could just be herself, without worrying what she would look like from the appearance of others.
She then started to dance around Gilbert in circles, every now and again sliding her fingers through his curly hair. She couldn't help but be happy, and he couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably at her new sense of confidence.
He pulled her mid way from a jump, right into his arms, which she responded by pulling away and running ahead. Gilbert instantly knew she was trying to get him to chase her, and to be fair, he didn't mind. He ran after the energetic and free minded young girl, as they ran in circles, both becoming slightly dizzy. Anne and Gilbert were flirting, and they didn't even care that it was not far from the school. Once Gilbert grabbed a hold of Anne's hand, he pulled her into his arms, again, but this time making sure she couldn't escape his grasp.
"Let go!" Anne was laughing so hard that she snorted.
"In your dreams Anne Shirley-Cuthbert."
The tight embrace lasted a while, with Anne's head resting upon Gilbert's chest once she gave up from freeing herself. Her arms were around his shoulders, and his around the lower part of her waist. They both closed their eyes, not ever wanting to let go of each other.
"Is it too chichè to say I don't want to let go?" Anne asked, still holding onto him.
"I don't think so." Gilbert replied, with the biggest grin on his face. "I feel the same, I don't want to go to school, with problematic kids who constantly start unnecessary drama."
"As well as the work being far too easy!" Anne added. They both laughed again, mostly because they both knew that only they found the work easy. He looked at the time on his watch, they only had 15 minutes.
"We better start hurrying up, come on." He pulled away from the hug, but didn't let go until he placed a kiss on her forehead. Her spine tingled when she felt his lips on her head, his hand resting slightly on her cheek. She was beginning to feel like how the protagonists in her books would feel when they had a romance.
The two headed on the path, now making it there mission to not get side tracked again. They didn't want to be late, so paced relatively quickly. They held each other's hand within theirs, both feeling the jitters of having their first ever relationship being so open.
As they approached the door of the school, Anne removed her hand from Gilbert's; he gave her an upset look.
"I don't want you to get nasty looks Blythe. It would make me feel bad."
"We already talked about this Anne." He grabbed her hand again, so soft that she couldn't help but wonder how delicate he thought she was. "I have nothing to be embarrassed about. Come on, let's go inside."
She smiled at the boy - he really was pulling out all the stops to woo her completely, even though he already had. She kissed his cheek, then looked at the blank, wooden door. He didn't forget that feeling for the rest of they day.
Being the gentlemen that Gilbert is, he opened the door for her, and allowed her to walk in first. He took her hat, and put it next to his on the rack. They then proceeded to make their way to their seats, realising that everyone was looking at them.
They still had their hands locked together, and as Anne tried to let go (for the fear of embarrassing Gilbert) he held it tighter. All of Anne's friends were approaching the two lovers, in which they looked at each other.
"Here we go..." Anne mumbled. Gilbert laughed, as they both knew, without having to even say it to each other, than Anne would have to be the one to explain what was going on.
"Gilbert... Anne.." Diana's smile grew instantly when she looked at the two.
"How are you both doing todayyyy.." Jane dragged out the word 'today' to emphasise that she was about to tease the two.
"Pretty hand in hand I see you both." Tillie giggled.
Josie and Ruby looked at each other. Inside, Josie was actually happy that the two finally admitted their feelings. Ruby also felt happy. After her talk with Gilbert, her feelings begun to fade away. From across the room, the boys yelled to Gilbert.
"Buddy... have you finally asked her!" Moody queried.
"Maybe it was a good thing I didn't do the play, as I heard it lead to then two of you sharing many interment moments.." Charlie confessed, teasing his best friend.
"You know if you all want to know what the deal is, you can just ask!" Anne couldn't help but have a tone of annoyance in her voice, to which everyone laughed. They all stopped almost instantly however when they heard none other than Billy Andrews. It was his first day back since the fight, and he somehow felt as if he was the alpha dog, when it was common fact that Gilbert was the superior king.
"What do we have here. How is it that Anne Shirley could manage to woo Gilbert, the second most popular boy in school. It must be witchcraft." Unlike last time, Billy laughed on his own. Everyone was on Gilbert's side, even some of Billy's friends. This made the cruel boy feel even more lonely then he already did, but decided to show his mean side to hide this.
Gilbert didn't once let go of Anne's hand. In fact, he held it up high and proud, and without hesitation, declared;
"Billy Andrews, I couldn't care less as to what you think me and Anne are like. I know how I feel about her, without her using any.. what was it that you said.. witchcraft? Why don't you go pine on someone who will actually give two rats as to what you think, because from now on, your opinions can be fed to the pigs!"
He then kissed Anne's hand in front of everyone. She turned her face to him, with such a soft smile Gilbert thought that he would pass out. Billy walked back to his seat in disgust, as everyone in the classroom 'awwed' at the two.
Miss Stacey came from the tiny room at the front, and saw the two holding hands. She instantly gave them a smile, then told everyone to take a seat.
As Anne and Gilbert moved to the opposite sides of the classroom, their fingertips glid from inbetween their grasps. As their last two fingertips left each other, Diana turned to Anne.
"Finally!"
