[ Fast forward around one or two months :) ]
It was now the last school day of the year. All of the Avonlea children were excited, they had been planning for weeks prior as to what they were doing to do in their free time. The parents on the other hand, where preparing themselves for some hard core looking after.
Most the girls in school had planned to sew, learn new receipts or have sleepovers. Anne planned to have sleepovers; no question about that, but she also had much more adventures ideas in mind.
She was going to climb the biggest tree, rest her head upon a secure branch, and read whilst looking out at the beautiful scenery. She was going to discover new places, and come up with names that best suited the location. She would have mud fights with Jerry if it was to rain, which it had been recently, and would play with Diana, Tillie, Ruby, Josie, Jane, and even the boys Charlie, Moody and, especially Gilbert, every day of the week.
These were all plans for later on in the holidays however.. her first little experiment would begin the very next day. She just needed to be patient.
Miss Stacey thought it be appropriate to reward everyone for behaving so well throughout the year, keeping in mind the few disturbances that happened - one being the Gilbert and Billy fight. When everyone sat at their desks for school to begin, she told them that today would just be games instead of normal classes. Anne was slightly upset about this, but was also quite content with playing games.
2 hours. Lunch. 1 hour. 30 minutes. Time seemed to be slowing down the closer it got to going home. Everyone was now fidgeting, the anticipation overwhelming them.
"Ok everyone.." Miss Stacey realised no one was paying attention the the game anymore. They were to eager to go outside.
"I know we all want to go home, but I do have one more announcement to make. End of year results!" Everyone groaned. They all knew only two people would be getting the highest results. Anne and Gilbert.
Everyone turned their heads to see the two smirking at each other. They, as much as everyone else, wanted to know who was going to come out on top. The boys were on Gilbert's side, the girls, Anne. It was a known, yet loving rivalry between the two students and the class.
"I'm going to write them up on the board, so just wait one moment." As Miss Stacey grabbed the chalk and begun to write, Gilbert moved over closer to Anne, as they were sitting on the floor.
"Ready to be beaten Anne, do try and be happy for me when you see I've topped more classes then you." He jokingly teased.
"In your dreams Blythe, I can bet that I will get more then you!" Anne was silently confident.
"How much are you willing to bet on that." He giggled, realising that they had just come up with the perfect opportunity to have some fun.
"Ok... if you get more than me, you get to pour mud all over me after class, as it has just stopped raining." Anne paused as she saw Gilbert quickly glanced to see outside the window. It indeed had just stopped raining. The dark clouds were prominent in contrast to the light blue sky. She then continued when he turned back to her, this time with a bit of flirtation in her voice.
"If I do, I pour the mud on you. Deal.."
"Oh your on." They shook hands, now eager to see the results.
All of the students in Anne and Gilbert's class loved the two together. They had been wanting them to get together long before they even realised their feelings toward each other, so, in a way, almost felt as if they were in the relationship too. Whenever people saw Anne and Gilbert do anything in the slightest way cute, they would squeal or just admire them.
