Juliet. Anne Shirley Cuthbert was to play the role of Juliet. Her heart skipped a beat. Out of all the people in Avonlea, Anne, one of the most peculiar young girls, got this opportunity. She stood up, holding the piece of paper close to her heart, and began to dance in circles around the room chanting, wheezing with excitement.
Marilla ran upstairs to Anne's room, scared as she thought she heard Anne crying, yet only these were good tears. Mathew was quick behind Marilla.
Both Marilla and Mathew stood in front of the door of Anne's humble chamber - silent, waiting for her to speak her peace.
"I got the role." is all Anne could muster. She was completely overwhelmed with joy.
The two siblings looked at each other with proud looks. They knew Anne was capable of getting the role... they also knew though that she was too excited to acknowledge their presence. They left Anne be, who was still dancing in her room.
"I get to play the role of Juliet,
I get to play the role of Juliet!"Anne sang the same 8 words over and over. As she continued to sing, she began to laugh, and imagine how she would play the role and how she would look. She would have her hair in braids.. no... she would have it half tied up and half out. Yes... half and half. And she would wear the most elegant dress that could be offered to her. She would wear the puffiest of puffed sleeves and have the most intricate patterns on the lace cut. Midway through her thoughts she suddenly jolted into a fixed stance.
How was she going to keep such a secret as this? Anyone who had met Anne knew she couldn't keep a secret, unless it was of all importance toward either Mathew and Marilla or her cherished friends. As serious as this was, Anne had too much happiness within her. She wanted to share it with someone.
Her thoughts trailed of until she was looking outside her window. The grass was ever so green and the skies as clear from clouds as could be. Diana. Anne knew that Marilla and Mathew were doing outside chores, so she decided to head to Diana's house and tell her the news!
Anne ran, as fast and agile as a cheetah, her feet kissing the land. Anne was made to travel at speed and as light as the paws of a lioness. Breathing steady, heart strong - this girl was born to run.
Anne arrived at the Barry's door within minutes. She tidied up her hair, then knocked on the door. Even though it had only been seconds she already grew impatient. She knocked again, more louder time. She paused infront of the door, and as she went to knock again a familiar face appeared.
"Mrs Barry!" Anne proclaimed.
"It's good to see you Anne." Mrs Barry looked stressed. She didn't know why, and as curious and she was, she knew to not intrude.
"I was wondering if Diana could come for a walk with me down to the Lake of Shining Waters. I have ever so much to tell her and it would be absolutely-" before Anne could finish Diana came from around the corner. What impeccable timing, Anne thought.
"Diana, I was just asking Mrs Barry if we could go for a walk. There is something exciting I must tell you!" The two bosom friends enveloped each other in a hug that lasted so long that from a strangers point of view, they wouldn't have seen each other for years.
Both Diana and Anne looked at the blanked face of Mrs Barry. Diana knew her troubles and it saddened her to see her mum like this.
Reluctantly, Diana was allowed to go, but only for 30 minutes. This was more than enough time.
The two girls walked arm in arm to the Lake of Shining Waters. Anne had a smile plastered across her face. She knew Diana grew ever so much more curious by the second, and when they reached the pond, they stopped.
