"So what did you think of Maddie?" he asked, resting his forearms on the wooden porch railing.
"Ya did good, kid." You ruffled up his hair with your knuckles and he squirmed away from you.
"Hey hey hey!" He laughed. "I'm sixteen now, I'm too old to be getting noogies."
"Uh-huh, sure," you agreed, sticking your finger in your mouth and pulling it out with a 'pop'.
He looked at you nervously and pointed at your wet finger. "You are not doing what I think you are?"
You nodded mischievously and lunged at him, sticking a dry finger in his ear.
"Ew that's—wait." He still squirmed despite the finger being dry. "You didn't actually do it."
"No, goofball. You've graduated from deserving a wet willy to a just a willy."
"Are you sure you're the older one?" He straightened his shirt out and leaned against the rail again.
You shrugged. "Someone's gotta fill the sibling role for me. Lucky you, I choose you."
"Great," he laughed.
You changed the topic. "Your girlfriend, she's older I assume?"
"How'd you figure that out?"
You shrugged. "I'm just that smart." He rolled his eyes at you and looked back out at the night sky. "No, she said she worked at a bar. That's not where your typical sixteen-year-old goes for a job."
"Yeah, she's eighteen."
"Look at you, getting the older women." You bumped your shoulder into his.
He stayed silent for a moment. "You should try to keep in contact more often now."
"I know," you said sadly, making no promises. You wouldn't make a promise you weren't positive that you could keep.
You stared out into the night in silence for awhile more when, suddenly, headlights pulling into the driveway caught your attention. You both stared at the car, you with more confusion than Becket.
"Fred's home," he whispered to you.
"I'm going to go say high." You bounced down the stairs to greet your old family friend.
But before you had the chance to say anything and pull him into a hug, he stared at you like he was seeing a ghost. You hesitated.
"You shouldn't be here." He didn't move, only stood with his paled face and wide eyes.
"Wh—what? Why not?"
"She's coming."
He was being cryptic, and very odd. He was like the shell of the person you knew.
"Who's coming?"
He didn't answer. You turned to Becket, who looked as concerned as you felt. Growing more worried by the second you tried again. "Who. Is. Coming?"
"Well, moi, of course."
Your hair stood up on end and you felt frozen in your spot. It couldn't be. Why would it be? You turned around despite yourself and nearly collapsed from the flood of negative emotions coursing through you. Rather than collapse like you wanted to, you sprinted to Becket and placed yourself in between the confused boy and the demon you've been tracking for months.
