Pansy:
meaning- lover's thoughts

Start the song. It's Phantom Pains by Nicole Dollanganger.

Lunch was uneventful apart from Papa practically shunning Jenna. He didn't look at her once, but he made a point of speaking to everyone else at the table at least twice. Josh held her hand under the table while they ate, sneaking her bits and pieces of his food as well.

Papa continued to ignore Jenna's existence until the children all relocated to the living room. Rain was drizzling down the windows, making playing outside against the rules. Thunder cracked and rolled as lightning flashed, making Maddy squeak with fear and run to Zack, who held her in his lap as he watched the television that Papa rarely turned on. It didn't receive any kind of cable or satellite programs, but Papa occasionally allowed his children to watch Disney films.

At the moment, they were watching Bambi. Well, most everyone was. Josh was watching Jenna and Tyler talk to each other on one of the sofas. Nicole had wrapped herself up in a blanket and fallen asleep with her head in Josh's lap after lunch. Papa had given her something to help with the pain in her foot that always worsened during storms. She slept silently against Josh's thigh now.

Even though Tyler had made it perfectly clear that he'd rather be with Josh than Jenna, it still made Josh feel jealous to see him with her. She sat close to him so their knees touched and looked at him with so much admiration. Tyler was just naturally warm, but that warmth bothered Josh when it was directed at anyone but him.

Apparently, Josh wasn't the only person who was bothered though. When Papa came in to give each of the kids some hot cocoa, he looked distastefully at the two children on the sofa. His jaw clenched as he set the tray of cocoa down onto the coffee table.

Before Josh could even attempt to distract Papa from the situation at hand, Papa was speaking to Jenna. It was all so casual that Josh was certain Tyler's siblings wouldn't understand what the words meant. Josh and Jenna did though. They knew exactly what Papa meant when he asked Jenna, "Did oak give you your medicine today, peony? It doesn't seem like he has."

It wasn't until the colour drained from Jenna's face and she struggled to get a response out that Tyler seemed to realize what the words meant. His jaw clenched and his body tensed when Papa continued to talk.

"Oak, I want you to take her upstairs and give it to her please," Papa said calmly, covering the innuendo almost as well as the threat that followed. "We don't want anything bad to happen to her if she doesn't take it."

Josh's hands shook slightly as he eased Nicole out of his lap, resting her head on a couch cushion instead. She continued to sleep restfully, and Josh was jealous of that. Jenna climbed off of her couch as well, avoiding eye contact with Tyler, who was clearly angry but also well aware that he was powerless to help her and her brother.

Only Debby looked up from the movie, watching her brother and sister leave the room. She met Josh's gaze as he took Jenna's hand. Tears welled up in Debby's eyes, but she looked back at the movie as if nothing had happened. Josh wondered if she knew what they were being forced to do. He hoped not. She was still so small.

It felt like Josh and Jenna were too small too, though, as Josh led Jenna into his bedroom. It felt foreign to start shedding their clothes, removing every article of clothing with trembling fingers as they promised each other they'd be okay and that this would be over soon.
