So one day in April (keep in mind the revolution happened in June so that can give you an idea of how much time has passed; also remember Marius was like almost dead for three months after the revolution) Cosette and Marius walked to her old house to see the garden where they spent so much time together.

That evening when Cosette talks to Valjean about this he asks her why they didn't just take a carriage. Or, why they haven't gotten a carriage of their own yet? They're super rich, why not?

Cosette doesn't answer.

Their visits get longer and longer until one day when they get to the room and there is no longer a fire lit.

Cosette says that it is very cold but Valjean is like, "Nah, it's fine, it's April." Valjean also says that he was the one who instructed the servant to not make a fire (he didn't).

The next day there was a fire but the two chairs were placed at the other end of the room. Valjean puts them back.

That evening Cosette tells him that Marius asked her if she would be fine living on an income of only 3,000 francs instead of 30,000. She said that she would be fine as long as she was with him.

Valjean finds this very curious.

The next day the chairs are gone. Valjean takes the blame again even though he really doesn't know why they are gone. He leaves almost right away.

The next day Valjean does not come.

The next day Valjean does not come again.

Cosette sends a servant to inquire about him. The servant tells Cosette that he is sick.
