Now it has come to the point where Valjean doesn't even leave his room, let alone leave his bed. He barely eats anymore. He stayed in bed barely eating anything for a week.

The old woman who is kind of taking care of him sends for a doctor. The doctor tells her that he is very sick.

"What is the matter with him?"

"Everything and nothing. He is a man who, to all appearances, has lost some dear friend. People die of that."
