"Marius was completely overwhelmed."
After reading this whole chapter, that is a gross understatement.
Marius is actually basically freaking out over the fact that Valjean is a convict and what that could mean for him and Cosette. He even worries that maybe he is married to a convict, too.
Cosette didn't do anything wrong you dummy shut up.
He wonders if maybe he was blinded by love and comes to grips with the fact that he and Cosette didn't really talk a lot when they first noticed each other and stuff like that. Of course now he realizes all the kind of weird stuff about their relationship.
He also comes to the conclusion that it had been Valjean at the barricade and that he must have come just to kill Javert (as far as Marius knows Valjean actually did kill Javert in the back alley).
Marius decides that Valjean shouldn't be allowed to visit Cosette.
