Now we're back to when Valjean hears the knock at the door. It is Cosette and Marius that walk through it.
Valjean is overcome with happiness and calls Cosette her name as she calls him Father. He asks both her and Marius to forgive him and they do. He starts going on about how happy he is to see Cosette again.
Marius asks him why he did not reveal that he saved Marius or that he spared Javert. Valjean explains that he felt the need to simply stay away from their lives in all aspects.
Valjean is getting all dizzy and overwhelmed and Cosette starts freaking out because she doesn't want him to die. Understandable.
The doctor has come back and asks him if he wants a priest to come. Valjean explains that he already has one and points towards the sky.
"It is probable that the bishop was indeed a witness of this death." Awwwww
Valjean lays down on the bed and Cosette puts a pillow under his head. He is growing weaker and weaker. He motions for Cosette and Marius to come closer.
He tells them to be happy. He tells them to indulge in being rich. He tells Cosette of the day when they first met. He finally tells Cosette her mother's name.
"He had fallen back, the light from the candlesticks fell across him; his white face looked up toward heaven, he let Cosette and Marius cover his hands with kisses; he was dead.
"The night was starless and very dark. Without any doubt, in the gloom, some mighty angel was standing with outstretched wings, waiting for the soul."
