The next day Valjean comes to visit (I guess Marius wasn't too serious about him not being allowed to visit). A servant meets him at the door and asks if he wants to see Cosette downstairs or upstairs. Valjean chooses downstairs.

Apparently downstairs means like the freaking cellar. The room is dank and musty and gross, although there is a fire lit, as though it was expected that Valjean would choose downstairs.

There are two chairs by the fireplace.

Cosette comes down and is like, "Why the heck do you want to meet me down here? It's gross."

But Valjean insists they stay there. He also refuses to call her Cosette anymore. Instead, he calls her Madame. In fact, he refuses to act fatherly towards her in any way. He even tells her to call him Monsieur Jean instead of Father.

Cosette thinks that she has done something wrong, but Valjean insists that it is nothing. She explains that she feels as if he is turning against her.

"So you don't like it that I am happy?"

That kind of shakes Valjean's world (good he needs to stop acting like a DICK) and he calls her Cosette again. But not for long.

He leaves soon after that and Cosette is puzzled.
