What is so important about this date? This is the day that Marius and Cosette got married.
Apparently France is way behind in the trends of getting married. Meaning they don't elope and then have their wedding night in a tavern bed. I mean...I think I'd rather follow France's method of marriage but...to each his/her own.
So the wedding party makes a sort of parade through the streets going to where the ceremony will be held. Cosette, Valjean and Mr. Gille are in one carriage. Marius is in the next, as he cannot see the bride before the wedding.
This day also happens to be Mardi Gras, so the party has to change their route a bit because of the crowds.
Valjean also has one of his arms in a sling because he was stupid and hurt his hand and didn't tell anyone.
Anyway their progress in kind of slow and they end up next to other carriages that hold celebrators of Mardi Gras in their masks.
One of these carriages holds two celebrators that are very interested in the wedding. One of them, through his mask, tells the other one to go follow the carriage and see where the ceremony is being held. The other one protests, saying that she could easily be arrested in she leaves the carriage.
The first insists, saying, "No matter, try. Understand, Azelma?"
