The Next Day

I found myself grinning at my locket before me, which I'd held inbetween my thumb and pointer finger, marvelling how simple yet pretty it was. For a quick gift, August bought me something that was now special to me. Last night I cut out pictures to fit inside the necklace on either side. One side was little-kid Carmen, the other side being little-kid me.

I vowed to wear this locket as much as possible.

After August had left yesterday and I gathered myself together from the state of awe, I had thought about what he'd said and what he'd given me. I thought about the sincerity in his tone, the hope and plead in his gleaming, fudge-brown eyes. Not a tiny bit of lie or bullshit peaked through his face. He was definitely for real, and I think now I can forgive, though he still owes me a bit of trust.

Letting go of the necklace from my fingers, I reached over for my phone upon the end table beside my couch, proceeding to call August.

"Dani, I'm glad you called" He spoke after a few rings, that NOLA accent coating his voice. He had a soft voice and a cute accent that always made me melt a little - hey, I couldn't help it.

"I forgive you, August" I said, getting right to the point.

"That's good" he replied. From his tone I could tell he was cracking a smile.

"Yea, wanna come over so we can talk things through?" I asked.

"Of course lil mama"

"Still too early for that nickname" I chuckled.

August and I plopped down in our usual positions on my bed.

"Girl why you make this bed every day if you just gonna sleep in it and mess it up again?" August asked, snarling at my neatly-made bed.

"Why do you wipe your ass if you're gonna shit again?" I asked through a slight giggle. He looked at me disgustedly.

"There's a difference between having shit on your ass and having an unmade bed smart ass" He laughed.

"Ight, I'm done with this conversation" I said, joining him in his brief laughing session. When ourlaughter died down, a short silence grew over us, where I looked down at my bed grinning and fiddling with my necklace. Soon enough, August noticed.

"What you thinkin' of?"

"How nice of you it was to give me this locket" I answered softly, grinning sweetly at him. "This means so much to me."

Those words caused a smile to smear upon August's face, seeming he was pleasured and satisfied at himself and my own happiness. "I'm glad you like it."

"Look" I said "I do forgive you, but you're gonna have to earn some trust back."

He nodded. "I understand that, shawty. I'll do whatever it takes."

"Good" I replied. "I also want you to know that it's not the drug dealing part of you that I care about. I don't judge people on what they do. I used to do what you do and a whole bunch more."

"Like what?" He asked.

"That's private."

"C'mon" He urged. "I'll tell you private shit about me."

"You first" I said through a smirk. He rolled his eyes and let out a really exaggerated exhale, which I had to lightly push his shoulder to get him to stop.

"Ight, fine" he surrendered. "Uh shit, to be honest, there's not much to say... I lived a pretty normal life before my mom and I began our downfall. I didn't really get into much bad shit 'til I moved out."
