Hello hello~
So.
I was just on the Wattpad app, y'know, taking a gander through some possible options to add to my library. I'm not going to name anyone for confidentiality's sake, and because I think it's just common courtesy. However, my common courtesy ends there because this rant is about what was in the opening chapter of the lovely book I decided to look at.
You know how some authors have that chapter at the beginning of their story that explains various things, maybe how it's a new book or other things like a summary (something to the same extent as my first "chapter"). Well, this kind lady had the same thing, something similar at least. She says something like, "PLEASE READ" so guess what? I read it. In a nutshell it said something along these lines:
I want my story to get high in votes because this is my first blah blah story and it would make me happy so vote for every chapter and comment on every chapter.
...
...
Like literally not even a please.
For those of you who don't really know me (which is most of you lol) I cannot stand that right there. I think that is the most ridiculous thing ever. And it's upsetting because I see it a lot on Wattpad.
What ticks me off about it is the fact that like, if someone reads your story it should be enough. I don't think becuase it's your first story under whatever category you should feel like you should get votes, or that because it'll make your day you should get votes. I mean, I like votes as much as the next person but I rarely ask for them, especially not like that (And I'll get to that in a minute). You'll hardly ever see me ask for votes. I do editing and advising work and I still don't ask for votes as payment. My payment is you giving me credit at the begining or ending of a chapter you're using that I edited.
I think that votes are something that you earn. Votes should be given to an author if the reader liked the story enough to vote it. Votes aren't there for you to ask for so brazenly and not even give a legit reason for why you deserve it like woooow. I just cannot believe the amount of times that I see that type of stuff on this site.
But wait a minute, getting back to asking for votes- If you're going to ask for them have some manners about it. The example I gave you at the beginning, I would say that it was asked for rather rudely. I say that because, first of all, the votes weren't even asked for they were demanded for: give me votes because this is my first kissing story hurhur. No. Have some manners and courtesey to your readers because they gave you that read. I think it should have been done more like this: If you enjoyed my first kissing story click vote! I think that's way more appropriate and it gives the reader respect.
And THIS: and it would make me happy-
I couldn't even believe my eyes. I'm not voting to make you happy. I'm voting because you're a good enough author to make me happy and therefore now I don't have a problem giving you a vote becaue it'll make you happy.
Sometimes too I realized that some people feel obligated to vote. I don't think that you should ever feel that way-
and oh my god I just remembered something else that was in the author's notes.
She said she was writing to recieve votes.
She said she was writing to recieve votes.
She said she was writing to recieve votes.
Ugh.
Spare me. GTFO. If you're here simply because you want to become famous on a writing community it's time for you to delete your account. If you're here because you love to write and you would love to become famous because of your writing and because you love your fans and vice versa, you can stay (:
Don't say things like that in your book, even if they're true because it gives people the wrong impression! Now I think that poor lady only wants to be here for votes (which she's not even asking for in a kind way) and it's not making me want to read her stories!
HNNNNNG anyway, this is getting way too long.
But the point is: You're not obligated to vote, especially if someone doesn't ask so kindly. You as a reader are here to enjoy a story that an author put out. If you liked the story a bunch and feel like it deserves a vote then vote away because that's how it's supposed to work.
Ciao!
