A Zombie's Heart

Chapter 36

There's a sound of a door opening and feet shuffling across the concrete. I lift my head slowly and see Kyra standing on the other side of my cell bars. She holds out a piece if bread. 

"Hungry? Stand up and take it." My eyes stay locked on hers as I sit motionless. She shrugs and takes a bite of the bread. "Just thought I should give you guys something to eat before we head out. We're going to find the others in your group and bring them back so that they can suffer with you. Oh, I probably shouldn't tell you that.... You might get emotional and overreact." The door opens again and Adam walks in grasping Abbi's arm tightly and thrusts her into the cell across from me. "She's going to keep an eye on all of you." She grabs the bars and glares at Adam. 

"Why put her in a cell if she's with you guys?" I ask. 

"She was on your side. We can't trust her. She could let you guys out and we can't have that happen." Kyra whips around to face Abbi and leans closely to her face. "If anything happens while we're gone, you'll be the first to die." 

She glances at each person in the cell next to me, who've been oddly silent the entire time. Then her and Adam leave. I look at Abbi and she turns away from me. 

"Why did you do it?" I ask sternly. She ignores me though. 

"Yeah, why did you do it abbi! We trusted you and you betrayed us! I'm going to kill you!" Addi starts telling.

 Without looking back at us she starts to speak. "I thought I was doing the right thing. I was scared and acted before thinking. All I could think about was mine and Yoongis safety. I'm sorry..." 

Nobody talks for a few moments. I hear shuffling in the cell next to me. 

"Guys we gotta get out of here." I hear Addi say as she yawns. "I sleep another night on this floor." 

I hear a click and the sound of the cell door opening. I see Addi walk across the room. 

"Addi!? What the heck!?" Kayla, Karissa, and Nate walk out of their cell. "How!?" 

She looks at me and smiles. "I'm a frickin bad-a person who snuck the keys while they were in here!" 

I stare at her, trying to figure out how she did it. 

"Addi! Unlock her cell!" Karissa whacks her arm. 

"Oh yeah." 

She opens my cell and they rush in. 

"What happened?" Nate asks as he crouches next to me to examine my leg. 

"I was shot. Three times. I think they broke it." 

He stands up. "I'll be back. I'm going to find something to wrap it in." 

"Be careful babe!" Addi walks toward him with her arm outstretched to hug him. She trips over my leg and falls to fall. I scream from the pain and tears uncontrollably fall from my eyes. "Oops. Sorry celeste."

 I glare up at her and she kisses Nate before he runs out of the room. He comes back a little while later with medical supplies. He wraps my leg tightly and I refrain from crying. 

"That should do for now. Let's go." 

Karissa helps me stand up and I struggle to stay off my left leg, the one that's broken. She wraps her arm around mine to help me balance and we start to walk out. I turn back to abbi who is standing by the door of the cell, watching us. 

I'm about to say something when Karissa interrupts. "She betrayed us Celeste. We can't take her, she'll stop us..."

 I take one more look at abbi before we turn back and leave the building. Although the outside was just as bad as before, being out of the jail and outside was a breath of fresh air. Nate grabs Karissas arm and pulls us behind the corner and puts his finger to his lips and points. They're back. It looks like they found the guys. Kyra, Adam, and Ellie get out of the black Ford and walk toward the building. I overhear their conversation. 

"Hurry. I can't believe Taehyung actually got away. We don't need to worry about him anyway. He won't survive if he's running toward the zombies." 

Ellie laughs loudly before their voices grow faint and the front door shuts behind them. We each run to the truck, the pain in my leg growing with each step. Nate gets in the drivers side and addi in the passengers. Kayla and Karissa already had the guys untied before them, Namjoon, and Jimin get in the bed of the truck. Jungkook opens the door and pulls me into the truck. I sit on his lap and wrap my arms around his neck, hugging him tightly as Nate begins to drive. There's a knock on the back window and Hoseok opens it. 

Kayla screams at us. "DRIVE FASTER!!"

 We look back and see Kyra, Ellie and Adam running after us. Our distance grows and then there's gunshots. The window shatters and Jin and Hoseok scream. Finally, we manage to get away and onto a road leading Maine.

 "Is anyone hurt?" Asks Nate, focusing hard on the road. Jungkook touches the back of his neck and when he holds up his hand, his fingers are covered in blood. 

"Other than a few scratches we're okay." 

Nate nods. "Good. Because we aren't stopping until we get to Maine."

 "But what about Taehyung!?" I cry. 

"Forget about him! We don't have time and he's probably dead anyway!" Yells Nate. 

Jungkook holds me back from attacking Nate and when I finally give up, I cry into his shoulder knowing that I would never get to see him again.
