I sit on the couch eating a sandwich while watching the news. It's just more stories on the zombie drug. It's the same video from last week. By now, the whole world is infected. The drug has taken everything from me. My family, my boyfriend. All I have left is Abbi and Addi. We're the only ones left. I've been watching the same news clip every morning since the day it aired. It's all gone. As I quote everything the news says, I hear a loud thumping noise coming down the stairs. I quickly turn and throw my dagger at whatever it is. It hits the wall right as Abbi and Addi walk into the room. Addi turns her head to see the blade an inch away from her face.
"Celeste!" she screams, "What was that for! And how the heck did you miss!" Abbi chuckles and continues walking, Addi close in pursuit. They grab a bowl of cereal and sit next to me on the couch. Addi takes a huge mouthful of cereal and looks at me. "You're still watching this? This aired the night your boyfriend-" Abbi punches Addi hard in the arm. "Ow! What!?" Abbi shakes her head and I get up and walk to the bathroom.
I look at myself in the mirror. I want to cry, but I can't. I have nothing left, not even my emotions. I punch the glass with all of my strength, shattering it. I let out a scream. Abbi and Addi run in and see me on the floor with my hands covering my head, blood all over my knuckles. They sit next to me and Addi hugs me.
"Celeste, I know it's hard. We're all experiencing the same thing. All we have is each other though, and we have to keep going, no matter what."
"I can't do this anymore, Addi!" I sob, "I can't keep going on! I can't even cry, and I want to, but I can't! I can't! I just..." Abbi and Addi pull me into a hug. We hear a loud banging and Abbi bolts up, grabbing a random gun sitting on the counter. She slowly walks down the stairs as the banging gets louder. Suddenly, she runs back up.
"Guys! They're here! We have to get out of here!" We run into the living room to grab our weapons before climbing out the window. We quickly get into the dusty red Ford sitting behind the house.
"Guys," I say, "I don't know how to drive."
Abbi looks at me with a shocked expression, "You're 17 and don't know how to freakin' drive!" I shrug and Abbi makes me get in the back as she takes the wheel. She quickly starts driving away and Addi rolls down the window and starts shooting at the passing zombies.
"DIE ZOMBIES!!!!! DIE!!!!!!!!"
We get away from the house with nothing but each other and a few weapons. We smile and laugh, happy to have gotten away alive. My smile quickly fades as we pass the house that my boyfriend died in. The memories fill my head and I go quiet.
Addi finally, after a long time, quiets down, "So, where are we going? Can I be the leader?"
Abbi punches Addi in the arm, "There is no leader yo pabo. And I don't know..." She watches the road carefully. I look out the window at all the ash and flames. I miss the blue skies. I miss the real world.
