What Magic?

Chapter 30

I have this jittery feeling that's been with me since I've woken up, yes I was scared stiff because of my nightmares but I was excited to start the school day. My first school day where I have complete control, kind of I mean I'm still learning, of my powers.

I start bouncing up and down in my chair at breakfast. "Serena, calm down, it's still school, not very exciting if you ask me," Phoebe remarks as she playfully rolls her eyes and takes another bite of her food.

"Oh, leave her alone I like that she's excited," Alice says grinning and I can't help but return it.

"How do you think you are going to do in your classes?" Elliot asks me causing me to turn my attention to him.

"I'm not entirely sure but I hope I'll do well I mean I've been studying really hard since the school year started. And with tests not too far away I'm hoping I don't have to relearn a bunch of things," I reply nervously I mean I've tried so hard and to end up just failing would hurt my self-esteem, at least I think it will. I then feel hands on my shoulders pushing down causing me to stop jumping.

I look up to see that it's Albus who is holding me down while Scoprius is standing next to him looking at me strange. "Calm down a bit Ser," Scorpius says plopping down on the bench while Albus does the same by sitting beside me.

"I can't help it!" I reply happily as my face starts to hurt from smiling so much. "I'm just really excited for our classes!"

"I really don't see the difference from any other day, I mean yeah you can use your magic but it's still school," Scorpius says shrugging as he takes a bit of a biscuit he had been buttering.

"Do you think I can ride a broom! Can I ride one of you brooms?" I respond having never thought of it before. I can finally ride a broom by myself!

"Um," Albus says staring at me worried. "As long as we are on it with you." My smile fell a bit, I want to do it on my own. "At least the first few times to make sure everything is okay, then you can do it on your own."

My smile quickly returns as I jump forward and give Albus a big hug. "Thanks Al!" I cheer before turning back to my plate and scarfing down the rest of my food. "Okay, let's go!"

I grab Albus's hand and the back of Scorpius's robes to pull him along before shouting over my shoulder, "See you later!"

"Hey, I was still eating!" Scorpius complains around the biscuit that was still in his mouth just waiting to be swallowed. I chuckle as crumbs fall out of his mouth and he tries to quickly catch them as if to not waste a single one, It's not like he's being starved.

History of Magic droned on but that still didn't stop me from being excited about my other classes. Though I am a bit scared for Defence Against the Dark Arts I mean spells can finally hit me and that's a really scary thought. I have only been hit once before, by Rose, and it isn't really an experience I want to relive.

Once class began the duels start and continue throughout the rest of the class. Professor Asher doesn't seem to be a very talkative person who teaches by demonstrations. Though the only time he has really discussed topics with the class is when explaining what a spell does and when he talks about magical animals, which isn't very often. "Ms. Longbottom and Mr. Corner your up!" Professor Asher announces as they walk up onto the platform.

"Good luck," Daniel says as if trying to sound snooty, I think, but he sounded kinda sincere which is a bit strange.

"Um, thanks," Alice responds a bit confused but when she gets into her position she goes serious.

"Begin!" They begin to send jinx's back and forth for a few moments and continue block they expertly. They try to take each others wands but that didn't work as well so Alice finally yells, "Petrificus Totalus!"

The spell hits him in the middle of the chest and he completely freezes before falling backwards, most likely hiring his head on the ground. "Ouch," Mostly everyone in the class says wincing at the thought of that happening to them.

"Very good, Ms. Longbottom," Professor Asher says before then turning to his frozen student and sighed. "Sorry Mr, Corner it will wear off eventually."

I made sure to cover my laughing because it was impossible not to laugh. Before I know it class is over, I mean I had dueled once and I was okay but a few of my movements were sloppy and I need to improve, it's weird to use my magic.

I head to potions saying goodbye to Alice as we go separate ways. "Hey Ser, so how was your first DADA with magic?" Scorpius asks when I sit next to him.

"It was okay, I still need to practice," I answer before Professor Nolband walks in announcing that we are going to begin.

"I mean you have Al and I to help you so I'm sure you'll be an expert by the time we have our O.W.L.S. Can you go get what we need?" Scorpius says making me smile, they really are the best, and I nod my head heading back to the pantry.

The rest of potions is full of Scorpius telling me what to do, which I'm okay with because potions is not one of my best classes. "Could you cut this?" And "Can you stir it this many times in this specific way?" It's all so extremely confusing I'm not sure how people can do it. He's told me that his dad is extremely good at potions so he's been learning since he was little, though I can't really see the fun in doing this as a child.

By the time class is over I am tired, I mean this class always makes me tired but today is just exhausting. I'm really glad I have flying next so it can wake me up.

"Are you ready?" Albus asks when we arrive and I nod nervously. I mean I was so excited this morning but now I'm scared, I mean what if I mess up and crash or- "Calm down, I'll be right there with you."

He probably saw the worry on my face and I small at him before taking a deep breath. "Good luck," A snarky voice retorts begins me and I don't even have to turn to see that it's Karina. 

"Let's do this," I say walking over to Albus's broom and standing there until Professor Hooch says we can fly.

She blows her whistle and the others are off while I place my hand over the broom. "Up!" I say sternly and the broom flies right up into my hand and I hold it tightly. I let the tension leave my shoulders as I swing my leg over and position myself on the broom followed by Albus. He wraps his arms around my waist making sure to hold on tight not sure how this will go.

I will the broom forward and it starts off too fast so I have to pull it back a bit and slow down. When I do I can't help but laugh out in joy. I'm actually flying a broom! I keep going forward and speeding up a bit when I get the idea to try some of the tricks Scorpius loves to do to show off.

"Hold on!" I tell Albus, even though I know he is used to doing them he probably doesn't think I'd do them especially on my first fly. I feel him hold me tighter right before I speed up and start doing corkscrews in the air.

I hear Scorpius telling at me to stop it and slow down but I just ignore him. I do three loop before I finally start to slow down and Scorpius flies up beside me. "Ser, are you crazy!?! This is you first time flying a broom!" Scorpius exclaims probably thinking about what could have happened to me, to us.

"I just always see you guys doing them during practices and have been wanting to do it as well," I explain while looking at him with what some may call puppy dog eyes willing him not to be mad. "It was totally worth the possible injuries I could have obtained."

"What about Al?" Scorpius asks pointing to Albus behind me.

"Hey Al, how was it?" I ask to the open air not able to turn around and see him.

"It's terrifying to experience from the back seat but otherwise bloody awesome," Albus exclaims setting his face on my shoulder so I can see him from the corner of my mind.

"See, Everything is Fine," I retort snarking while playfully sticking my tongue out at him.

"Oh you are going to get it!" He exclaims trying to reach out at me but I dodge him and speed forward.

"Catch me if you can!" I tell over my shoulder and hurry to keep out of his grip. This is way too much fun!
