Flashback

I sat at a chair fit for my small stature at a table looking across at him. There was a game board between us and I curiously watched him set each and every different piece on the board from my seat. He glanced at me with a smile and I tried reaching for one of mine when he stopped me gently.

"Not yet, Angel." My Father said quietly.

"What kind of game is this, Daddy?" I asked.

He finished putting my pieces on my side and pointed to them.

"It's similar to checkers, but called chess. Each piece moves a different way, while others follow the group." He explains, and I nod my head understanding.

"So, what do the small ones in the front do?" I tilted my head to the side.

"They can only move a couple places at a time. While the ones behind them like–" he pointed to a tall man piece with a crown on top, "–the king can move about the same, but different directions."

"Okay...." I scrunched my face in slight confusion and thought about figuring it out.

"The object of the game is to protect your king and queen, while the pawns in the front move forward to level up on my side of the board without getting taken by my pieces."

He moved one of his pawns forward two spaces.

"Your turn, sunshine." He smiled warmly, leaning back in his chair.

I look at the pieces and move the pawn in front of his to block it.

"Can I still move mine forward?" I asked, watching him move another pawn.

"No, it doesn't move and neither does mine until the game is over when one of us calls 'checkmate' on the other." He gestured for me to make my move and I squinted my eyes at the board.

"Checkmate?" I asked, moving another pawn.

I was still trying to figure out when to move my knight or the bishop, and here he was throwing big and what seemed complicated strategies and end game.

"It's when a specific piece blocks either the king or queens path in any direction. Like stopping them from going forward." He nodded. "Neither can ever move until someone wins the game, and even then they can't go back or forward."

"Makes sense.....I guess?" I mumbled.

"You'll understand it someday, sunshine." He smiled sadly.

"Hm?" I looked up at him and he shook his head, dismissing it.

"You think you can beat me, do you?" He laughed under his breath, but it was cut short when the end of Raph's sai touched his neck. "I think we all know how this will end, turtle."

I struggled to get back up again and groaned, slowly moving. My shaking hand reached for a dagger tucked in my ankle sheathe. Streams of wet tears were falling down my cheeks fighting through the fire of pain throughout my body.

"With ya gone, that's how." He growled.

"I beg to differ." He snickered. "You forget, I'm immortal now thanks to your brother's genius handy work."

What?! I froze when I was about to stab his foot. I saw him reach for a dagger behind his back with his free hand. My eyes widened when Raph didn't see it. A second before he was about to stab him, I felt my body move on it's own, adrenaline rushing through me, getting up and shoved him over to take his place. Almost immediately I felt something sharp impale my lower abdomen and I gasped in pain.
