So if you're trans, you may want to get your name legally changed. The process and fees vary from state to state and even by county, and some places even do background checks.

In Maine, the fees range between $70 and $125, and background checks are performed in York County.

When I went to get my name changed, it was simple. All I had to do was go to the probate court in my county, and ask for the paperwork to file for a name change. Then you fill it out and return it to them. All it costed for me was $95. Then they get back to you and you can go to court in about a month or two, depending on when you handed in the papers.

When you get your name changed, they will publish it in the newspaper, unless you're a survivor of domestic abuse.
