There was a letter waiting on Hermione's desk a few days after when she walked into her office that moring. Hermione stared at the rolled up piece of parchment, wondering who it could be from as she slowly approached her desk.
Grabbing the parchment, she broke the red wax that sealed the letter and unfurled it, looking over the black ink.
You filthy little mudblood, how dare you still wield a wand and assume that you have the same rights and abilities as actual witches and wizards! You do not belong in the magical world. We will hunt you down and destroy you before you damage our society further! You cannot hide from us. Soon we will rise again, and you along with the rest of your kind will be no more!
Just as she read the last few words, the parchment began to burn her hands immensely. She yelped, dropping the parchment on the floor and looking at her burnt fingers. They were starting to blister from the burns and she panicked, apparating down to Harry's office.
Harry jumped up immediately as soon as she appeared, startled. "Hermione? What are you...what happened?!"
He saw the tears rolling down her cheeks now and rushed over to her, putting his hands on her arms. She showed him her hands and blurted out, "There was a letter on my desk! And when I read it, it burned my hands!"
His brow furrowed and he asked, "Was there an incantation on it?"
She shook her head, still crying from the pain as her fingers began to curl. Harry whipped out his wand and pointed it at Hermione's hands. "Episkey!"
Nothing happened. She started breathing heavily and then he grabbed her, apparating the two of them back to her office. He then started rummaging through her cabinets and drawers quickly, searching for something. "Hermione, where's the Essence of Dittany?!"
She was still breathing quickly, shaking her head. "It smashed during the battle...I don't have any more!"
Then she looked down at her hands again and gasped. "Harry, the burns are getting worse!"
He saw that the entirety of her hands were red now instead of just her fingers. He looked around and then saw the parchment on the floor, immediately stooping down to grab it.
"Harry, don't!" She yelled.
He didn't listen in time but as he picked the parchment up and read it over, he was unharmed. Hermione carefully tried to wipe away her tears with the back of her hands, still shaking and crying out in pain as the burning in her hands continued.
Draco suddenly apparated into her office, looking around for her in a state of panic. He quickly rushed to her as soon as he saw her and demanded, "What happened, Hermione?"
"She received a letter that burned her hands badly," Harry answered after Hermione couldn't answer. "We need to get her to St. Mungo's; she doesn't have any Dittany and Episkey doesn't fix her burns."
Draco growled at him as he approached and Harry backed off then, putting his hands up defensively. "Draco, I didn't do anything. I'm just trying to help."
"You should've taken her to St. Mungo's first," Draco growled, picking Hermione up and cradling her in his arms. Harry noticed that his eyes had darkened and he stayed on the other side of the room to avoid pissing Draco off any further.
"I was trying to help her, but she didn't have any Dittany," Harry argued. "I tried!"
"Draco, he did," Hermione choked out through her tears. The redness was practically crawling up her arms, almost at her elbows now as she cried out from the pain. "Please, the pain is getting worse!"
