It's been three days now and Astryd still hasn't woken. And, sadly, neither has Loki. He has been sleeping in his room all three days. This is too much for him. Thanos. Falling in love. Getting a child and, for what? To lose it? For it to die. It wasn't even two months old.
Why can't Loki ever notice these things? Why doesn't he... try hard enough? Why is it always Loki's fault? Why? That's the only question that is filling his mind as he dreams... Why?
*Loki's Dream State*
"Why can't you see?
Why are you so pathetic?
Useless.
Useless.
Useless.
You're NOTHING!"
Why does Loki keep hearing these voices. Astryd's voice mocking and teasing and... hating. He hears Thanos' voice too. Why?
"Jotun runt!
Ready for our next experiment?"
How did Loki get here?
Why is he back in these chains against the cold wall?
No... no... He was safe. His friends promised! His family promised! They promised!
"Do you really think they care? No one does! Useless! Useless! You're so useless.
You're own mate doesn't even care!"
No! No she does! She does!
"No, Loki. I don't."
Astryd?
"I'm sorry. I love Thanos. I never loved you! Gross!"
No... but... you promised! Astryd! You promised! I'm sorry! I'm sorry I didn't save our child! I'm sorry! Forgive me... please...
*End Dream State*
Loki shot up, breath hitching, and beads of sweat covering his features. Just a dream...
Except... it wasnt. It happened. His child was dead. He couldn't save it. Hell! It wasn't even born! How was he supposed to know!?
You should've known.
Why is Thanos still talking to him? Wasn't his deed done? What else can he take away that he hasn't already? He took his child, his dignity, and he almost took Astryd!
He swung his legs over the edge of the bed, letting them dangle, his toes touching the ground. He heard a knock at the door and jumped. "Master Loki! Master Loki!" Said a very anxious servant.
"You may enter." Loki called hoarsely.
The door entered and the servant Loki recognized as Mear came in. "My lord, Astryd has awoken."
Loki shot up out of bed running to the medical tower. Nothing mattered but her.
. . .
Astryd sat up in bed thinking. Why does her stomach hurt?
Was it...?
Thanos?
Yea, Thanos! She won't let that dick-wad ruin her news to Loki. She remembered telling him but at a very bad time. Mainly because she thought she was going to die. But now everything is okay.
She heard a door creak open and Loki entered with a sad look on his face. Why was he so sad?
Loki pulled up a weird golden chair and sat next to Astryd and held her hand. "How are you, darling?" He croaked. Why does he sound so... sad?
"I am... doing better, yes? You?" She asked, a wide grin on her face.
Loki wandered, how she managed to keep such a happy smile on her face even in the darkest hour. Does she know about...The baby? "I'm okay," Loki coughed to clear his throat. He's been screaming from nightmares for the past three days.
"You don't sound okay. What's wrong?" She asked, a worried frown forming on her features.
"Do you know?" He asked, eyes squinted with pain.
"What's wrong?" She asked in a small, frantic choke.
"Darling, when you were wounded in my arms... you gave me some news. Do you remember what the news was?" He asked saddened.
Astryd furrowed her eyebrows. Then she formed her mouth in an "O" suddenly realizing. "Oh yes! Of course! Loki... I'm pregnant! You're going to be a fantastic father!" She exclaimed with excitement.
Loki looks at her, with a gleam in his eyes, warm tears forming in the corners, his lips trembled slightly.
Astryd frowns and says, "Loki? Shouldn't you be happy? Oh, I get it! Tears of joy. I see."
Loki gives her a sad look, a single tear sliding down his cheek. "No, darling..."
Loki takes the, now sweaty hand, and slowly slides it to the stitches that now binded her wound. She looks at him and down at his arm. They lock eyes with each other and she suddenly realizes. "Loki..? What's happened?" She whispers.
Loki looks away. "I am afraid.. that..."
The tremble in his voice tells her enough. "Wait... Loki... The baby is okay... Right?"
Loki let go of her hand, shooting up out of the the chair. His fists clench and Astryd notices the small trickles of blood that fall. Loki let's out a roar and lifts the chair and throws it with ease. It crashes into the opposite wall with a hard 'dink'.
Astryd gasps and puts her hands to her mouth. Loki stands, back facing her, breath wheezing in anger. "Loki, calm down." She begs.
He turned around, tears now streaming down his face. "I should've done something! Dammit! I should've stopped it! Our baby is dead!" He yells. "I won't be a father! I won't have a child! I won't see them grow to be a mighty king or queen! Hell, I don't even know if it was a boy or girl! The wound was too deep to tell!" He catches his breath, calming himself.
"Loki... This has to be a mistake. It... It has to be..."
Loki closes his eyes, and Astryd notices the bags under them. He falls to his knees with a crack. "I know..." He whispers. "I'm sorry..."
Astryd struggles to get to her feet, but manages as she gasps and holds her stomach. She limps towards him and kneels down next to him. She's crying now. They don't know how long they cry.
It doesn't matter.
Nothing matters.
Not any more.
