I was sitting
In the passenger seat,
My head tilted back,
Looking out the open window,
Watching the scenery
Speeding past.
He was seated
Left a few feet.
Both hands on the wheel.
And he said
"Are you sure you're fine with this?"
I replied
"Better me than anyone else".
He told me
"I'm sorry things had to go this way
I'm not quite sure what to say.
If you change your mind I understand.
It's a difficult thing you're doing today."
I sat in silence
Watching the trees
Speeding past.
Watching the hills,
Not as fast,
But still creeping by
A foot at a time.
He asked if I wanted the radio on.
I said I didn't need to use it,
The wind was music
To my ears.
It catered to my fears
And washed away my thoughts.
We watched the sun rise
To the east,
On the right
Of the road.
"It's the most beautiful one I've ever seen"
He said.
"That's just because of what's happening today,"
I corrected him.
The silence grew stronger.
We drove a while longer.
Apprehension filled my thoughts.
I told him him
"I'm growing afraid"
He replied
"We don't have to do this."
I answered him
"Yes we do.
I'm not sure I could stand
Someone else being in my place."
The clouds grew dense,
The wind grew cold.
A tear ran down his face.
I told him it was fine,
That I was fine.
I don't think he believed me.
"Thank you"
He told me,
As he twisted the steering wheel,
As the car spun into oncoming traffic,
As we got to our final destination,
As we finished our daily mission.
