Beca POV
It had been a three days since we found out that Bronte was here. Since then Cece had thankfully woken up and she was still stable but needed to stay for observations and lost of tests. We were learning about all the medication she will have to take and what we will need to get and all the risks. Bronte had had four surgeries since we knew it was here and still hadn't woken up. She was scheduled for another two surgeries. We had been spending most of our time with Cece who was awake, with the other kids who didn't want to leave as they didn't want to be home alone.
Bronte hadn't woken up yet. We had gone to see her between surgeries but it was one of the hardest things to do. Seeing your child waiting at deaths door and being told before every surgery that she could die and then that it is a miracle she is alive after. Chloe finds it difficult to be in there for 2 minutes without braking down in to tears and having to leave. The doctors are doing well and staying with her. Dr Lexie Grey is constantly looking after and giving us updates but half of me feels bad because that should be us in there with her.
We were sitting eating lunch with Cece, in our normal silence, when the question we all thought about was asked.
"Is Bronte going to die?" Cece asked and the room went silent.
"Cecelia! Don't..." I said back knowing that it was just going to hurt Chloe.
"It's what we are all thinking isn't it. You guys hardly talk to about her. You can't be in there with her for 3 minutes without crying. You don't tell us anything. You won't let us see her. We are all thinking that she is going to die. Even you guys and we can see it in your face. So I am the only one with the balls to ask. And after you can yell at me all you want for screaming at you and being inappropriate and probably making my heart worse but... So, I am going to ask one more time for everyone. Is Bronte going to die?" Cece yelled at us making all stop to think.
"Bronte is not great... She... she... um" I start but realize I don't even know my self what is going to happen to her.
"Bronte has sustained many injuries. All of the very bad. She has suffered burns on her leg and lost the other above the knee. She has suffered bad head injuries and in her organs as well. People have survived worse." Dr Robbins walked in helping.
"But people have died from less, right?" Cece asked.
"Yes. But Bronte is fighting which is the main thing. She is not giving up and neither are we."
"Can... can I see her?" Cece asks shakily.
"She is about to go into another surgery but when she comes out if your heart is stable you can. But you have to care for yourself, first. Because you can't help her if you are not okay."
"Can... people still hear... when they are... you know?" Brynlee asked just as worried.
"Some people can. When doctor Grey talks to her she seemed to respond. She may not remember it when she wakes but we think she can hear us."
"Just in case she can hear. Don't mention her leg." Brynlee says.
"Why?" Dr Robbins asked and I'm thinking the same thing.
"Just... just in case... she..." Brynlee tried to speak but couldn't finish the sentence so Cece stepped in to help her.
" Just in case she stops fighting. She is a runner. The fastest. She had scouts looking at her already. She is... was going to be a professional. All she thinks about is running. Her room is filled with her awards. I think Brynlee thinks that... maybe... if Bronte knew she didn't have her leg and that she couldn't run. She wanted want...want... to... live. She used to say running was her life. And if she knew she may think what the point in living." Cece finished and the room turned back to the painful silence.
