The Diver Boy

Chapter 1

I climbed up each stair towards my goal, quicker and quicker sprang to each step as I ran though the routine in my head over and over to every fine detail. I knew I had to get this one right. I finally reached the top. The 10 meter board. I took a deep breath and walked slowly to the edge of the board. I looked down at the pool; I could see the bottom of the pool like always and saw the tiles that read ‘Plymouth Central Park Swimming Centre’. I could just about see my coach standing by the edge of the pool waiting for my dive. I closed my eyes and calmed myself down. No matter how many times I do this I always get scared and nervous and I know it might sound silly for a 10 meter diver but I hate heights. I took one last breath and told myself I could do this; and then took off by jumping up the highest I could go; and began my dive reverse two-and-a-half somersaults, tuck. I felt the rush through my body as I did my dive I could feel myself speeding up as I glided through the air and doing the routine. Then suddenly I hit the water and slid through the surface of it. I Had done it.

I kicked up to the surface and swam to the edge of the pool. “Well done May! Good job you slightly went over as you entered the water but it was good much better than last time you should be fine tomorrow!” said my coach Kat as she reached me as I climbed out of the pool. “Thanks” I smiled as I grabbed my water bottle from the side and gulped it down. “Good dive Kido” he said and taped my shoulder I smiled as I recognized his voice imediatly and turned around to face him with a cheeky grin on his face “Thanks Tom” I said and hit him gently on the shoulder. “Ouch” he mocked and laughed.

Tom and I have been mates ever since I turned up one morning at the pool after my dad forcing me to start diving classes and we instantly clicked. He was 7 and I was 6. I was so nervous because I knew no one and then a cheeky smiley boy came up to me and said “Hi I’m Tom Daley want to be friend” and as cheesy as it sounds that was how we became so close as friends and ever since that moment we have been friends. Tom is a year older than me and we both go to different schools, but we normally train together along with a few others, but what makes it more easier is that our coaches are very close friends.

“You ready for the competition tomorrow?” he asked while passing me my towel “Thanks and kinda but so nervous you?” I said while drying myself off. “You’ll be fine you are always nervous then you do really well and yeah” “Thanks Tom but I don’t know it’s the World championships it’s a big thing it means whether we can compete in the Olympics” “You will be fine” he laughed. “You going?” he asked when he saw me picking up my stuff “Yeah I need to get home do my homework because of the competition tomorrow you’re lucky you finished you GCSE’s last year” “Aw I know how you feel last year was horrible see ya later text me though” “Will do Daley” I mocked “Stop calling me that all the time you know I hate it” he moaned “Tell you what I will stop when you stop calling me Kido” I smiled “But you are still a Kid” “I am only a year younger than you Daley” I laughed. “One year is a big difference” “Whatever see ya tomorrow what time are they picking us up?” “Ummm… well they are picking me up at 6:30 so you probs around 6:45ish” “Errhhh too early” I groaned “Tell me about it well I will see you tomorrow” he smiled “Yeah see you” I said and walked towards Kat who was talking to Andy Tom’s coach she saw me walking towards them and said “You did well today Kido” “Kat seriously Tom already calls me that I’m 16 not a kid” I moaned “Your still a kid until your 18” she said “Whatever” I laughed “I saw your dive it was impressive if you carry on like that your looking like Gold Olympic standard” Andy said. “Thanks Andy let’s hope all goes okay tomorrow to get through” I smiled “See you tomorrow” I said to Kat and Andy and I walked into the showers and changing rooms to get changed.

I swung my kit bag onto the living room table and jumped onto to sofa. “How was training?” Dad said from the kitchen. “Alright” I sighed. “You home early tonight” I said and walked into the kitchen and placed my kit into the washing machine to find Dad sitting at the table reading the newspaper. “Took a few hours off to see my special diver” I rolled my eyes. My dad was never normally home he worked extremely long hours due to my mum leaving me and my dad when I was small. I knew he was doing his best and just doing what he had to do and I was grateful for it. He passed me the newspaper he was reading from across the table and smiled. ‘May Tierney New Olympic Diver?’ it read I carried on reading ‘May Tierney the 16 year old girl competing in the diving World Championships this Saturday from Plymouth. The 16 year old is competing in the individual 10 meter, syncronized 10 meter along with Katie Thomson aged 17, and is also to be in decisions to be completing in the mixed syncronized later on this year. The 16 year old is also a hopeful young competitor for team GB in the Olympics later on this year; this competition well determined whether she will compete for team GB. An also a hopeful a diver is Tom Daley who is also competing this Saturday. We wish them both luck with the Championships this Saturday.

I passed it back and groaned. “You’ll be fine” he said “You don’t get it dad I get so nervous” I sighed and grabbed my school bag and began to do my homework. Once I finished I checked the clock 21:00. I said good night to dad then climbed into my bed and grabbed my phone, and saw I had a new message from *Tom Tom Daley* ‘See you tomorrow Kido ;) xx’ I replied ‘See you Daley ;) hahah bright and early xx” I smiled and locked my phone then fell in a deep sleep all ready for what tomorrow might bring.
