Chapter 3
It was just 2 hours before my first dive and the seats in the audience were filling up fast and the sound of people talking was gradually getting louder. I was sat in the women’s changing room along with Katie and Tonia. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach already forming; I tried to put that to the back of my mind. “May calm down we are going to be fine and if we do exactly what we did in training it should turn out perfect!” Katie said. I snapped out of my daydream to see her staring at me with a reassuring smile on her face. “Yeah May trust me you will be fine you may be the youngest but trust me you are just as good as the rest of us if not better” said Tonia while tying up her hair into a tight bun. “Thanks you! but I am no way near as good as you, but good luck to your too” I said and I pulled them into a big hug. “Next stop the Olympics” Katie beamed “Come on let’s go the men’s primarily round is starting” said Tonia. Katie and I followed her out of the changing room and into the audience area where we saw Andy, Kat, James (Tonia’s Jack’s and Chris’s coach) and Richard (Peter’s coach). We all took our seats and I sat next to Katie and Kat. Kat looked at me then down at my hands which were shaking like mad “You feeling okay?” Kat whispered into my ear. “Yeah just nervous” “You will be fine” she said and put her hand on my shoulder. I changed the subject “Are the boys ready?” I asked Andy “Yeah I just saw them and they were buzzing” he said “Good I bet they will all do great” I smiled and he nodded as the first diver headed up the stairs to the 10 meter platform.
Tom competes in the 10 meter platform individual and syncronized 10 meter platform like me but in the men’s and his partner is Peter Waterfield. Together they unstoppable and are a high hopeful for the Olympics as well as the rest of us. Peter and Tonia both live in Southampton so we only mainly see them in competitions even though we are syncro partners but Tonia and I are always texting but she is 6 years older than me and Katie is 2. Tonia competes in the 3 springboard event as well as the syncronized 3 meter springboard with another girl called Rebecca. Katie does the exact same events as me the 10 meter platform and the syncronized event. Peter is 14 years older than me and 13 years older than Tom, yeah sounds a lot but they have a similar body shape which makes them prefect partners for diving. Chris and Jack are also a year and 2 years older than me. So that makes me the youngest. Yep that’s why I have the nick name ‘Kido’.
As each diver took to their dive it was completely clear who Tom and Peter’s rivals where. The Chinese. They were always the main rivals even for me and Katie. I watched as Tom and Peter entered from the men’s changing room in their speedos and began to make their way up the stairs towards the 10 meter platform, I could tell they were nervous as much as Tom says that he isn’t I know he is, diving from a 10 meter board is pretty high so he would be mad if he wasn’t scared. He was concentrating as he and Peter made their way up higher and higher, I knew exactly what he was doing he was running through his dive. Like Andy and Kat had taught us too. As he walked past the 7 meter board he looked over to us and smiled slightly. Me and Tonia cheered and smiled when we saw him, he laughed a little as people gave us some weird looks. I watched as he finally approached the 10 meter platform and chucked down his shammy. I was nervous for them both this was their last dive this determined if they qualified for the Olympics. I watched as Tom and Pete took a deep breath and watched Pete count them in and Tom nod in response. As they took off my stomach was going nuts for them I had to force myself to watch and I was glad I did. As soon as they hit the water the crowd erupted into cheers Me, Katie and Tonia jumped so high and cheered as loud as we could. Tom and Pete hugged as they got out of the pool as the judges confirmed that had come first for Gold. “May and Katie go down and get ready it’s your turn” said Andy “Good luck” Tonia and Kat said. We hugged them both and made our way down to the changing rooms. “We can do it come on!” said Katie as she practically dragged me down. We walked into the changing room and got changed into our swimming costumes once I had done that I grabbed my ipod and water bottle and put my headphones in my ears.
I turned up the music full blast as I played Numb by linkin Park. I let the music take my mind off the pressure and get myself motivated. I turned off my ipod and headed out with Katie towards the pool. Before we entered the pool she pulled me into a massive hug “Good luck we can do this” she smiled I smiled back “let’s go” and we walked out in front of the crowd. As we walked out I saw Tom I ran over to him and pulled him into a massive hug “Congrats you did amazing you smashed it!” I beamed “Thanks Kido now listen to me you will be fine take deep breaths and I see ya when you win” he smiled and hugged me tighter “Thanks Tom” “Good Luck to you too Katie” he smiled “Thanks Tom” she said “Tom say well done to Peter to from us” “Will do”. Katie and I took our seats by the water edge to wait for our turn.
When it was our names announced we stood up and began to make our way to the stairs. “We can do this May” Katie smiled I nodded in response. As we walked up each step I went through my dive to every detail in my head even though a dive only lasts a few seconds there is so much detail and if you mess one bit up, your dive will completely fall apart. I saw Kat in the corner of my eyes staring at me but I keep my focus. As we got to the top I wiped my hands with my shammy then chucked it down. I took a deep breath and smiled at Katie as we made our way to the edge of the board. I tilted my heals over the edge and got my mind focussed “Ready” Katie said “Yep” “1,2,3” and I breathed in; rasied my arms above my head and then jumped.
I kept myself concentrating, getting into my pike position and my 2 twists. I felt myself slicing through the air then I suddenly hit the water I knew as soon as I hit the water my dive had been the best I had ever done. I just hoped me and Katie were in sync. As I was under the water I heard the crowd erupt into cheers a massive smile appeared on my face and I swam to the surface. I swam the poolside and jumped out I ran over to Katie and hugged her tight. “We did it” he smiled “I know” I beamed we both waved to the crowd and I saw Tom and Kat on their feet cheering away. I actually felt like I had done well for once. Today was beginning to becoming a good day.
