(Nicolas.)
"She wasn't always that way." Nicolas sighed. "Your mother was once the most beautiful person to walk on this earth. She gave me some of the happiest moments of my life. I wish I could get the old her back. I was so in love with Marge it didn't make any sense. I'd give my all just to get her the help she needed." He put his hand over his face, giving Delilah the run down on him and Marge's relationship before it took a turn for the worst. He still had love for her in his heart, but he knew the woman he'd fallen in love with, was far gone.
Delilah forced her tears back. She wished she would have known her mother before she started using drugs. She wished for the normal life. She wanted to know what it would have been like to grow up with both parents in her life.
"So, where'd it all go wrong Dad, what happened that was so bad that she started using?" Delilah asked out of curiosity.
Nicolas took a sigh. "Marge started hanging around the wrong people, but even that's not an excuse. We all as humans have what I like to call inner demons, that you have to deal with before they take over and ruin your life."
"Do I remind you of her?" Delilah asked.
"Every time I look in your face, I see Marge. You both are beautiful. I know you're smart, you get that from your old man." He chuckled. "I wanna see you do great things. Have you thought about going to college?" He turned his attention towards her.
"I don't know. I've always been interested in interior design. But, I don't have the money for that, so its just a thought." She answered.
"Never sell yourself short. If you want to do something, do it. Worry later. Look into it, and I'll see what I can come up with." He told her.
A tear escaped her eyes, making Nicolas confused. "What's wrong babygirl, did I say something wrong?" He raised a brow.
"No. It's just... why didn't you fight harder for me dad. Do you know what I had to go through?" Her face turned red, as she thought back to the terrible nights she spent selling her body for her mother. The nightmares she had about it each and every day.
Nicolas pulled her into his embrace, placing a kiss on her forehead. "Relax baby. I tried, God did I try. I didn't know what your mother was capable of under the influence. She tried to kill me. The love I had for you was so strong, so believe me, I tried to take you with me, but there was no telling what could have happened that night." He clenched his jaw. He hated himself. He felt like he was the cause of the pain Delilah was feeling.
"There was never a day that went by, that I wasn't looking for you. Although it took years for my prayers to be answered, at least I was blessed with the opportunity to finally reunite with you now. You don't ever have to worry about being without me again." He rocked her back and fourth, as he used to when she was just 7lbs 6 ounces.
Without even realizing it, Delilah had fallen asleep in her father's arms. For some reason, she felt the same way she felt with Rod in his presence, protected. She was happy that she had finally given her father the chance to explain all that had happened. She was moving forward to being at peace.
Scooping up Delilah's body, Nicolas placed her in the bed of his guest room. He didn't want to ruin the sleep that she had probably been missing out on.
Although she wasn't his little girl anymore, he wanted to make up for loss times. He wanted to do all the things that they had missed out on doing together, from shopping sprees to tea parties in the living room. He'd never get to watch her grow, but that didn't mean he couldn't patch up the missing pieces in their relationship.
Getting down on his knees, Nicolas looked up to the ceiling. "Father God, I kneel before you right now, to ask that you heal the wounds in my daughter's heart. Lord God, protect her from any further harm. Allow her the strength and courage to forgive me for not being there. Help me do the best I can to be there now. Lord, look after Marge. I know she isn't acting like a child of God right now, but please don't give up on her. Get her the help she needs, because Delilah needs her as much as she needs me. Lord, erase the hate in which has formed in her heart and replace it with nothing but pure love. In Jesus name, Amen." A tear rolled down his cheek as he got up from the floor.
Lightening flashed, and rain begin to pour, it was as if God had heard everything that had been prayed for.
Things were bound to change, it was just a matter of time.
