Claire's POV
"Breathe" Miel giggled.
I looked at her and tried to calm, but her eyes and her whole body shook with excitement.
The undeniable truth was: Miel was just as nervous as I was.
I laughed nervously at her and nodded. I paced back and forth in the room and every now and then I got faster. I tried to focus on my breath but no help.
"You're making me even more nervous, Claire" she complained whining.
This made me go even quicker.
And this was the moment I heard it. I jumped into the air as the bell rang.
One time.
Then it was silent.
The knot in my throat got even tighter. One last time I adjusted the belt around my waist which would hold my sword later on. One last time I breathed heavily. And one last time I looked back for Miel for one last reassuring smile of hers.
The thick oak portals swung open, pushed by two soldiers. I looked at both and bowed a little. I got two nods and smiles back.
Till now I did nothing wrong.
I gazed up from the floor and regretted it nearly immediately. Thousands of eyes where focused on me. I felt their concentration on my body, the armour, the still empty sheath, my short hair and the colour on my face.
The crowd spared a passage towards the temple, two hundred meters maybe. The trees to both sides let white blossoms fall onto the stones.
Claire, start walking, child. I heard Rel in my head saying. Soothing and yet expecting the best from me, like always.
I set one foot in front of the other, without stumbling, like I hoped. I got less nervous with every new step I didn't fall.
It was still dead silence.
Five meters...
Two....
One...I stood right in front of the three stairs up to the temple of the goddess of innocence. Right in front of Rel, smiling, and Mo, dead serious. Behind my two masters stood all the other members of the inner circle.
When I looked at master Mo again he looked a little inpatient and somehow also nervous.
Why?
After his absence in my training I got suspicious. What was he doing? Two months ago it started. Nobody could find him. It was like he was tilted from the surface of the planet. All were sure this never happened before. Master Mo never really left the town.
Claire, concentration. Rel chuckled in my head.
"Are you ready, Claire?" Mo asked, apparently for the second time now.
"Uhm...yes, sure." No, definitely not.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, this evening, the angle gets a new soldier. Claire. She passed the training and will now start her service for the goddess of Innocence."
Silence.
"Do you want that? Do you want her to live or die?"
Wait, what?
Silence.
Was that a yes?
Silence.
Fuck this. Make it stop! Nobody said something about a possible execution!
Silence.
Oho. Shut it up and please make it quick.
The scream started suddenly and I jerked together. Everyone joined, except me and the inner circle.
