Why is it called 'Beauty Sleep' when you wake up looking like a troll?

For some reason I both like and dislike this saying.
In one sense it is true. No one looks there best when they wake up.
I mean, I just woke up and oh man I could use a shower and food. (and maybe some mints...)
In another sense this is demeaning and false. What is the exact definition of a troll? Maybe your idea of a troll is more exaggerated and has more warts than mine. Or maybe it is short with an overly large body?
But then because sleep is a necessity and need it everyday therefore: I always look like a troll when I wake up?
