16. And Jealousy

I ended up driving to the mall. So as to not waste my drive, I went grocery shopping.
Somehow, I forgot the baggage that of Earn's words.

I was about to close my  compartment after I deposited my groceries when someone beat me to it. I looked  up to see Trek. He looks so much better from when I saw him the last time at the fast food.

"Thanks."

I smiled at him. Genuinely.

"You're welcome."

He smiled back. Why? I somehow forgot about him these past days.

"Did you change your number?"

Came Trek's question.

I smiled sheepishly.

"Yeah."

Trek smiled.

"Because of me, right?"

I chuckled. 

"Yes."

I didn't know why, but I no longer feel any remorse towards Trek and his treachery. I didn't know how and when did it happen but I was just glad that I was finally feeling okay with Trek now.

I bypassed the six month rule, I guess?

"I'm sorry."

Trek said after a long silence. I looked at him. I can see that he's being honest.

"Still, you were the best thing that ever happened to me."

"Trek I---"

"I know. I'm just telling you. I'm actually with someone now, he's not you, but we're good."

I smiled at him.

"I really hope you won't fvck it up this time."

Trek chuckled.

"I'm trying."

I was happy for him. Really.

"So, you're still with him? The guy from the fast food, was it?"

I was about to tell Trek the truth when a familiar figure caught my attention.

I saw Earn standing by a car in the opposite side of the parking. He was looking at Trek and I, face unreadable. Why did I suddenly feel guilty?

Just then, I saw previous campus moon appeared out of nowhere and dragged Earn to the entrance of the mall by the shoulder. 

Why the fvck did I suddenly feel annoyed!?!

I turned to Trek and faked a smile. I needed some more air.

"Hey, so, uhm. Nice seeing you, but I need to run. I still have some things to do."

I patted Trek on the shoulder and went straight to the passenger side.

He was about to stop me, but I was quick to turn the car on.

"Hey, wait! Can I have your new number instead?"

I smiled at him.

I guessed we were not on that level yet.

"Not today, Trek. Bye!"

I was still feeling annoyed at the moment. Not with Trek though. Tsk! So they're definitely dating now huh!?! Well, I don't care really. Good for them! It's definitely for the best!

I was trying to convince myself that and I thought I was okay with it. But the scene of Earn being dragged playfully in the neck by last year's campus moon kept replaying on my mind and I felt sour.

I didn't know how it happened but I ended up at McDonald's with a bucket of drumsticks. I didn't know fast food could taste good when you're annoyed. And I didn't know what I was annoyed about or who I was mad at. I mentally smacked myself in exasperation.

I was  on my second stick when someone hovered over me.

"I thought you said you're never getting back together with that jerk, what happened!?!"

I saw Earn's gloomy face when I looked up. I surveyed the surroundings. I didn't see Earn's tail with him. Why was I happy?

I looked at him.

And remembered how he flirted with that guy.

"I wasn't commenting about your epic flirting with Jek, so shut it!"

Earn sat opposite me.

"I wasn't flirting with anyone! It's you who is deliberately trying to get back with your asshole ex when you adamantly said that you won't!"

I glared at him.

"Why do you care?"

I annoyingly munched on my chicken. The next thing I knew, Earn plucked it off me and into his mouth.

I gaped at him.

"That's my question too. Why do I always care when it comes to you!?!"

I gaped at him.

The walls started to crumble. I blinked at him.

I didn't know if it's because he was finally in front of me after months of being distant or was it because of all the unhealthy things stuffed in what I was eating that I said something I never thought I would ever tell Earn.

"I asked myself that too."

That, and I saw remnants of chewed chicken fell off Earn's mouth.

Dirty jerk!

Sexy.

But dirty!
