Wairimu thought she heard someone shout, "Go to the bedroom." Her ears were alert she could have heard a pin drop. After those words she was sure her siblings were being cleared from the room. Any minute now her mom would be banging on her door. The time of reckoning was here.
It's how it always happened when she did something that her parents considered outrageous. Her mom would come with a spare key and drag her from her room and her dad would be waiting in the living room with a belt. "I'll runaway and never come back to this retched place," she thought.
She heard movement, footsteps moving out of the house and then a moment later she heard a horse voice saying, "Don't kill my baby, don't kill my baby." It sounded very much like Olivia's voice. This is what prompted her to get out of her room and dash to their living room.
Olivia was lying on the sofa in a fetal position. She looked pale and lifeless. On the table were bottles of medicine and an envelope. She looked at the medicine, they were prescription to relief pain and ease cramping.
She opened the envelope and took out a document. Immediately she read it her mouth fell open. She looked at her sister lying on the sofa like a block of meat and felt sympathy for her. 'This must be dads work,' she decided.
She went to her room feeling morose and sad. She sat down and simpered realizing that they were at the mercy of a tyrant. She felt defeated then she thought for a moment and realized that his fathers power stemmed from having money and status. If all that was ripped away he would be nothing.
She decided that she would start work at her fathers agency and she would make it her job to climb to the very top and then she would take everything that was dear to him.
