They were seated at a café with the tech lead having lunch. Ambrose was in blue chinos, brown leather shoes and on his wrist a silver watch. You could tell he was well paid, he had a quiet and content manner and beside that he had volunteered to pay for their lunch. A meal of duck fried in coconut milk, rice and suated broccoli.
Wairimu gazed into his brown eyes. He was maybe late twenties or early thirties. His bald head gleamed in the overhead white light. She had vowed that she would never settle down with a short man but there was something amiable about Ambrose that made her want to be around him.
"So Ambrose what does a girl have to do around here to stop ferrying newspapers," she said playfully, painfully.
"Those newspapers are really getting under your skin, eh?"
"Mmmh, hmm."
"You know everything is about how you look at it. If you think it's a miserable job then it will be the most miserable thing you ever do."
"You're saying there is an upside?"
"Of course, there always is," he paused. "You're not ferrying these newspapers to just anybody, you're ferrying them to the bigwigs of Ajabu Digital. Try to strike a conversation with these people. Create rapport."
"How? Half of them are never in their office and the other half, well, they are dicks for lack of a better word."—
Ambrose laughed.
"and the HR lady is a total bitch," she murmured but Ambrose heard her.
"Comment on something that stands out about her, something that she seems to care about. Could be a watch, could be a picture on her table."
"Uh, you're not going to bill me for all this good advice are you?"
"Come on, I'm in tech not accounting."
"So is Mr. Tech dating?"
"Do you want to take me off the market?"
"Is that a yes?"
"I don't think dating me would be the best look for you right now."
"Heh, why, you don't want to date newspaper girl?"
"Newspaper girl happens to be cute but I'd want her to learn a thing or two before she goes running after the lowest hanging fruit," he said and looked at his watch.
"We should get going."
"That cotton won't pick itself, eh?"
They laughed and headed for the door.
