Alerts woke everyone in the army. They were here. The breaking news was everywhere. People were shocked, panicked , they were terrified. They had every right to be. After all, how could this happen? Israelians can not just walk into our country. There were contracts between us. They just broke them. That easy. That simple.
Israelines did as Youssef expected. They camped at the eastern border. Journalists blocked the ministry and the army gates. Looking for answers. Waiting for decisions.
"Sir, what would be our reaction to their violent act?"asked one of the journalists.
Youssef stepped forward. They took photos and recorded his every breath. Because they all knew that this is the first and the last time the army is going to make an announcement. They were right about that.
"We'll close the fence between us and the eastern side. No one goes in and no one goes out." Said Youssef , his voice sharp and firm. Journalists were surprised from the decision. They thought that at least the army will announce that they will fight back. It was a day for surprises.
Out in the street, people were divided. Some supported the army because they were afraid of what might happen if we go to war with them. And some hated the fact that Israel had invaded us and that we are going to let the Egyptians who live in the eastern side die. As everyone knew that Israelines will kill those people. Just for pleasure. And now the army had surrendered to them as well.
Now the news were all over the world. The European countries announced that they will take Egypt side if Israel didn't have a good reason for their act. And no doubt they had made up one.
"Sir, news just arrived from the fence, they see that someone is trying to get to the other side. What do you want us to do, sir?"asked one of the soldiers.
"Someone? Trying to pass to the other side? Is that all you got soldier?"said Youssef in a loud tone.
"I'm sorry, sir. I'll go there and check for myself."said the soldier keeping a distance now.
"Don't. I'll go." Said Youssef leaving at once. This was a threat to his plan.
Youssef walked slowly by the fence. Trying to find out who's that someone? But what he saw was: a girl dressed in a long brown skirt and a white blouse. She was trying to climb up the fence. He took one more step and he knew exactly who she was. Mariam was trying with all the power she got to climb and she was half way up. Youssef grabbed her hand and forced her down. Her eyes were on fire, seeing him standing in front of her. He could see clearly that she was angry from him.
"You" she said almost shouting.
"Me" he said as calm as he can.
"How could you do this? How could you? There are people there. Kids, women and old people. You are just going to let them die, while you watch from behind your fence." Shouted Mariam from the top of her lungs. Youssef said nothing but he could feel his blood boiling now. Mariam could see his veins , she knew her words are affecting him and she decided to go even further.
"What kind of person would do that? Are you even human? You came from no where and now you are acting like you own the whole country. Who the hell do you think you are? You are nothing . You are just a monster." At that word , Youssef slapped her across the face. Her face turned immediately red, a drop of blood fell from her nose. She could feel her eyes burning to cry. The tears were forming. But she wouldn't let them, she wouldn't let them fall. He watched her fighting the urge to cry, holding her tears up. Making her face as solid as she could . He stepped back and she turned around. Her eyes fixed down , unwilling to meet his. She vanished immediately .
He couldn't believe that he had just done that . He had never done that before in his life. He never hits girls. He just don't do that. Why did he lose control? If anyone said that to him , he wouldn't have lost his nerves and acted on anger. So what made him snap like this. Those words coming from her, had a very powerful effect on him. He knew what he did was wrong and he regretted it. He shouldn't have done that. But he wasn't the one to apologize, either.
