The Novak family waited well into the night, the bright light of the hospital waiting room lighting up their worried faces.A doctor had come out around 11 o'clock to update them on how the surgery was going. It wasn't exactly good news. She had said that there was a complication and they were working very hard to keep him alive. That's all anybody was really able to comprehend at that point.
"It's all my fault." Castiel whispered to himself as he paced back and forth in front of Dean and Michael.
"No, it isn't Castiel we talked about this." Michael said tiredly.
"Cas, Did you blow up the diner?" Dean asked. Michael looked at him like he was insane.
"What? Dean, don't be..." Cas started.
"Just answer the question. Did you blow up the diner?"
"Dean, you know I didn't." Castiel stopped in front of Dean.
"Say it Cas, just trust me." Dean looked up at him.
"I did not blow up the diner." Cas said, obviously annoyed at Dean's antics.
"Did you know the diner was going to blow up?" Dean questioned again.
"No, I didn't."
"Would you have suggested we go to the diner if you knew?"
"No."
"So then how is it possibly your fault?" Dean had a slight smile in his eyes.
"I-"
"You always think logically, so explain to me how it is your fault." Castiel gave him a small smile and sat down next to him.
"Thank you Dean." Cas rested his head on Dean's shoulder and Dean placed a kiss on the top of his head.
"Wait, you remember-" Michael was cut off by Dr. Sheppard walking out to talk to them.
"The surgery went well, Lucifer should be fine, as long as he wakes up. There were some complications but we managed to repair all the damage that was done. Unfortunately, as everything looks like it was successful, I cannot guarantee that until he wakes up. If all is good he will wake up, if not..." Dr. Sheppard was obviously upset that he was unable to do more to help his patient.
"Can we see him?" Gabriel asked above the questions of of everyone else.
"Of course, follow me." Dr. Sheppard led them back to Lucifer's room.
Cas didn't move, he clutched onto Dean with his unbroken arm, afraid. Dean had stood up but is now crouched in front of Castiel.
"Cas?" Dean said, voice full of concern.
"Dean I don't want to lose him." A tear fell down Cas' face.
"I know Cas. I know." Dean wrapped an arm around Cas as Cas rested his head on Dean's shoulder.
"What if the last thing he remembers about me is that I forgot to come see him?"
"Cas, look at me." Dean took Cas' head in his hands and forced him to look at him. "Lucifer is not dead. He's going to wake up, you can't kill the devil."
"Not dead. He is going to wake up." Cas repeated a few times. The rested his forehead against Dean's and closed his eyes, processing. Dean's hands had moved to rub comforting circles into Castiel's back.
"You ready now?" Dean asked gently when Cas opened his eyes.
"Yeah, thank you Dean." Cas said as he got up and they started walking to Lucifer's room slowly.
