Alphys put the mysterious black crystal down on the table.
"This crystal is called a Black SOUL Gem. This gem itself has the ability to encase a human SOUL inside of it. Back when the war between the two sentient raged, Monsters used these as an advantage. Once the human died and the SOUL itself was airborne, the Monster can stick this up in the air and the SOUL itself goes into the gem. When the war continued after a break, Monsters would crack these open, releasing the SOUL, and absorbing the SOUL, making them more powerful," Alphys explained.
"What after we lost?" Asriel asked.
"The crystals then became a part of dark magic called necromancy, or the art of communicating with the dead, especially for predicting the future. Necromancers used these gems to enchant magical items, making them more powerful than their non-enchanted counterparts. This was the case until Hannibal Traven BANNED the art of necromancy during the Middle Ages. This caused a necromancer uprising during the events of the Second Oblivion Crisis, which ended when the Seventh Champion of Cyrodiil killed Mannimarco, The King of Worms. Necromancers went into hiding after the Crisis ended, and the art of necromancy soon started to die off, until the College of Winterhold allowed the practice to continue forward. Necromancers then were met with heavy criticism, which finally put an end to the dark act. Many Black SOUL Gems were then concealed in Nordic Ruins, Ayelid Ruins, Caves, Forts, pretty much any underground structure the humans tampered with," Alphys explained.
"I found this in the middle of the forest, though. My maternal grandparents have a huge forest as a part of their land. When I was little, I loved to explore that forest for hours. Sometimes, I'd uncover old, ancient Ayelid structures. I even saw a Wayshrine to one of the Divines while I was over there," Develyn explained.
"Odd. Some Ayelid ruins contain these coffins outside. This is where most Black SOUL Gems were made. Every week, there was this strange purple light that illuminated from the coffin itself. Putting an empty Grand SOUL Gem, which was the gems humans used during the war to encase Monster SOULs, into the coffin and using the SOUL Trap spell on it will convert the gem into a Black SOUL Gem. There's a possibility you encountered the remains of an Ayelid ruin that had the coffin outside. The coffin possibly contained a Black SOUL Gem inside," Alphys explained.
"Possibly," Develyn explained.
"With Develyn possessing one, does that make him extremely powerful?" Frisk asked.
"Considering he's already extremely powerful, possessing the Black SOUL Gem kind of does nothing to him. This does mean one thing, though. If Develyn were to kill a human, he can hold the SOUL off until he truly needs it via breaking the gem and absorbing the SOUL itself. After all, he has the power to absorb Human SOULs, Monster SOULs, and even Dragon SOULs," Alphys explained. "Well, I gotta get going. I promised Undyne I'd watch some anime with her. I'll see you guys soon, I guess."
"See ya, Alphys," Toriel stated.
"What if I use the crystal to absorb Chara's SOUL once she dies?" Develyn asked.
"You can use that, unless you wanna straight up absorb the SOUL," Asriel explained.
"I'd rather not. I wanna wait until the perfect moment," Develyn added.
"Well, I gotta a call from the school. They finally cleared the skeletal remains of the dragon and school should continue tomorrow as planned. You guys should start getting ready for bed," Toriel stated.
"OK," the three children said in unison.
