CIGARETTE 17

Everything is nice and clean. No evidence from last night breakdown can be seen.

The sun invades the living room slowly at seven in the morning and the smell of coffee fills up the apartment.

Ashton is almost home. He usually arrives home around this time when he comes from a night out.

Arctic Monkeys play softly as I sit cross legged on the couch with a mug of coffee in my hands.

The numbness doesn’t leave my body. When I hear the front door open, I don’t even flinch.

“I wasn’t expecting seeing you up this early.” He says surprised and closes the door.

I close my eyes and listen to the music, letting out a sigh. “I couldn’t sleep.”

“Is everything alright?” I can almost sense a bit of worry in his words. “Sorry, I only saw your text message when I was in the subway coming home.”

At his words, I debate with myself. Should I tell him the truth or throw another lame excuse for him to swallow?

I want to tell him, but at the same time, I’m afraid of his reaction. He probably will think I’m weak, that I’m not strong enough to deal with my inner struggles and issues.

“Yeah, I meant to text Elle, but I texted you instead without noticing.” My eyes are fixed in the TV’s black screen, but I move my gaze to the side, finding Ashton’s still at the door. “Sorry.”

“It’s ok.” He shows a smile. He doesn’t seem too drunk. “I just got worried, thought something had happened and I wasn’t here for you.”

I don’t react at his words. I only smile back at him. “No, I’m fine.” I set up from the couch, placing the mug on the coffee table and walk to his encounter.

“Wanna eat something? I bet you’re starving.” I say, pushing him closer to me by the lapels of his leather jacket.

He gives me a sweet, quick kiss. “Yes, please.”

We both walk to the kitchen and Ashton sits by the table as I start preparing some scrambled eggs with bacon along with toasts.

“It smells so good, and for sure it looks yummy.” Ashton tells me as I set a plate with his breakfast in front of him and a glass of orange juice. I only give him a smile and sit in front of him. “Aren’t you gonna eat something?”

“I already ate breakfast.”

Soon the curly-haired starts eating and telling me the events of last night. I’m glad he had fun.

“This afternoon, I’ll have to go to the library to finish this stupid assignment with Calum. I hope you don’t mind.

“No, not at all.” I shake my head. “I actually have some things to do.”

“Perfect.” Ashton sets up from the chair. “I’m going to sleep now.” Before leaving the kitchen, he kisses the top of my head. “Laters babe”
