Tal flopped down in the seat next to me reluctantly, dropping his backpack to the floor with a thud. I wondered how the teacher had known his name since it was only the first day of school.
"I can't believe I have to sit with the ugliest fucking nerd I've ever seen." I heard Tal mumble. I stared at the board, hoping the teacher would put up some notes even though it was the first day of school. He didn't.
"Good morning class. My name is Mr. Wylow. I will be your biology teacher. Where you are sitting now is where you will sit for the rest of the year. No exceptions." I heard a bunch of squeals followed by a groan of what sounded like agony coming from Tal's direction. The rest of the class went extremely slow. We went through the topics we would be going through during the class, and Mr. Wylow told us a bit about himself. I went through the rest of the morning getting to know my teachers. So far, I only had biology with Tal, and math with Andy. I also had to worry about Allison. She's had a crush on Tal forever, and her friend Miranda liked Andy. They were also out to get me. During lunch, I sat alone, thankfully nobody had noticed me. I went through the next three classes without any problems. None of the four had a class with me...until the last class of the day, world history. I had all four of them in my class.
"Ugh. I have to sit next to her in this class too?" Tal groaned as we got our assigned seats. I sat in the far, left corner, one away from the back...that was where Tal was sitting. Next to him was Allison, next to Allison was Miranda, and in front of me was Andy. I was pretty much surrounded...except for Miranda who sat the furthest away from me.
"What to do you mean handsome?" Allison cooed.
"I sit next to her in biology, the only other class I have with her."
"I feel so bad for you." Allison responded, trying to act sympathetic. I knew she was faking it. That, or she hated me more than she had last year. Last year she had ignored me unless I got in her way of being with Tal. She's been flirting with him for the past three years, and still hasn't gotten him as a boyfriend. I didn't know if she would ever stop trying.
"Hey! What did I say about us having fun this year? Well, now we get to have fun in the morning, and the end of the day...twice in a row!!" Andy said to me, turning around in his desk to face me.
"Alright class, please be quiet. We will be having a lot of group projects and partner projects this year and you will have time to talk then.." I pretty much zoned out after that. Group projects? Did that mean I would have to work with one of the at least once for the year? I didn't know if I could handle being one of their partners, although I'm sure that they would just make me do all the work like everyone else in the school does. Since I'm a nerd, apparently I should have to all the work for any sort of group project or partnership.
When class was over, I rushed to my locker, put away all the things I didn't need, which was pretty much everything, and rushed out to the bus, hoping to get there before Andy did so he wouldn't see me getting on the bus. I was hoping I could hide under a seat until we got to my stop. It wasn't very far away so I wouldn't have to hide long. I was in luck. Andy wasn't any where on the bus, so I ducked into a seat while no one was around and climbed underneath, trying to not to be so suspicious.
After about a minute, I could hear Andy trilling my voice, trying to find me. I stayed silent, not even breathing, hoping he couldn't see me in my hiding spot. I watched as his feet walked past and stayed in the seat behind me. No! I thought. He can't sit there!! He might find me!! What am I going to do? I continued to hold my breath, trying not to panic. I felt his foot hit my leg and I froze completely.
"What the.." I heard Andy mumble, watching him as he ducked his head down and saw me crouched below the seat. "It's the piece of trash I've been looking for!!" He said, grinning mischievously. I felt the bus jerk forward, meaning the ride was just starting. I was going to have to last longer than I had first anticipated. Andy grabbed me ankle, holding me to the ground and keeping me near him. I squealed slightly as he added pressure to my ankle and twisted it slightly.
"Does that hurt?" He mocked, grinning even wider. I squeaked in response. He twisted my ankle further. "Answer me." He growled.
"Y-y-yes." I managed to say over the pain that was shooting up my leg.
"Good. But, if you're not crying or screaming that means I haven't done my job, now have I?"
"N-n-n-no." I stuttered, trying to brace myself for what he was going to do next. I couldn't have prepared enough for what he was about to do. He took my ankle with both hands, and twisted as hard as he could. Since I had my backpack on, I wasn't able to turn around so he me trapped in just the right way that he only had to twist and I wouldn't be able to turn or even get away. I heard a small snap, waves of pain shooting up my leg and spreading over my entire body. I screamed, tears streaming down my face. The bus jerked forward, drowning out Andy's laughs as the tires squealed.
"Is Eva on?" I heard the bus driver yell.
"Yes! She's right here!" Andy called, letting go of my ankle. I crawled out, careful of my ankle, and limped off the bus as everyone laughed at me. The bus driver did nothing but look annoyed. I limped home, tears spiraling down my face each time my foot hit the pavement.
When I walked into the orphanage, Mrs. Cooper saw what state I was in, and rushed me to the hospital, not even taking time to ask me what happened. The doctors took X-Rays and determined that it wasn't fractured or broken, only severely sprained. They put a big black boot on my leg and told me to wear it at all times, and to take some Tylenol. It felt soothing to walk on the boot except for the fact that it was huge and kind of awkward.
When we got back, Mrs. Cooper finally asked me what happened. Thankfully I had already thought about what I was going to tell her.
"It got stuck in a pothole, and when I tried to free it, it twisted."
"Are you sure that's what happened?"
"Positive." She sent me upstairs and told me to get some rest. She'd see how it felt tomorrow and decide if she should buy some Tylenol for me since they didn't own any. I changed into pajamas which look like this:
I couldn't sleep since my mind was swirling with thoughts and memories. As I finally drifted off to sleep, I had made one conclusion. If I was going to get through senior year, I was going to have to change both the way I looked or dressed, and the way I acted....I was going to have to be the opposite of who I was now, except for the knowledge aspect.
To be continued.....
