"What? Why Juliet?" Damian asked. "Am I not good enough for you?"

"No. That is most definitely not the case," I said.

"Then why? After all of this planning, and all of the good times that we've shared, why would you want to leave me?" he asked.

"I..I...think...end...badly," was all I said. I couldn't even form words.

"Why?" he repeated once more.

"I t-think that you might turn back into y-your old self," I said finally. "I'm scared that you might hurt me, or say mean things again."

"Juliet, I would never even dream of doing that to you or anyone else ever again." Damian said.

I stood there for a second thinking about what I should do. Should I go ahead and leave him so that I and my future generations may live happily? Should I just forget about Maya's crazy story?

Get it together, I thought, think of how selfish you sound right now. Who cares if Damian gets upset? He deserves to feel the pain that everyone went through in school.

He was still talking about how well he would treat me, and how sorry he was to everyone who had to deal with his foolishness. That's when an idea popped in my head.

Why does he really want to marry me?

I remember him telling someone that he was going to marry another girl when 'this was over'.

...

It was a hot summer's day, so I decided to open the living room window to let in some fresh air.

"Hey, Simmons! Long time no see!" says a man who was walking down the road. Damian was outside cutting our lawn and doing yard work that day, and he stopped to shake hands with the guy.

"Hey Charlie! What's up bro?"

"Oh nothing much. I'm just visiting a friend nearby. I've heard that you popped the question! Who's the lucky gal?" the man asked with a warm smile.

"Oh. She's nothing special. Just a small town gal, who's not really my type. I'm gonna find me someone better when this is over anyways," Damian said shrugging his shoulders without a care in the world.

I was taken aback by what he had said, and by the looks of it, his friend was, too. Charlie's eyes were so wide that they nearly popped out of his skull!

"Well...uh..I'll just be on my way now!" the man said while nervously glancing in my direction before walking off. Damian turned towards the window and that's when he knew that I had heard him.

We argued about it for two weeks straight. He kept on saying that he didn't really mean it, and that it was a harmless little joke. That was when I decided to put it behind me, for the sake of our marriage.

...

I made my decision.

My vision blurred as tears pricked my eyes. Soon salty droplets were falling down my cheeks.

I slipped off the engagement ring, and threw it in Damian's face. I quickly wiped my face with the palm of my hand before he could notice that I was crying.

I need to show him that I'm stronger than this, I thought. I will not be weak. I will not cry. I will not cry. I will not cry. Don't give him what he wants.

"I am not going to marry you, Damian Simmons," I say, surprised by my sudden confidence.

"Oh, and why is that?" he asked clearly getting madder and madder as every second passed. His cheeks were bright red.

"Because this 'small town gal' says so!" I sneered at him.

"Don't tell me that your bringing that back up!" he yelled. "That was months ago, that was in the past! I thought that we had put that behind us!"

"Our marriage is over, so now you can go on and find someone who's much better than me!"

"You are going to marry me, and you will obey my commands, Juliet! With this ring I practically own you! There's nothing that you can do to stop me!" Damian declared.

I laughed harshly. "I knew it. I knew it all along. You were using me when you didn't have anyone to help you out during your hard times. You literally had no friends because you had pushed everyone that cared away from you. You decided that you could easily manipulate me because I was young, and unwise."

No words escaped his lips.

I was right. He didn't love me all along.

As if on cue, Maya walked in and stopped dead in her tracks once she realized what was happening. She slowly backed up and was nearly out the door when I said, "Stay."

"I hate you Damian, I really do. I was just too blind to see that. Now get out of my house, now," I said trying to stay calm.

"This isn't the last of me," he said before stomping out of my house in the blink of an eye.
